It sounds like you could have bronchitis or maybe even walking pneumonia.

Walking pneumonia or Atypical Pneumonia often begins following a cold or the flu. You feel better, then all of a sudden your cough comes back and it never seems to go away.

Walking pneumonia refers to pneumonia that is mild enough that you may not even know you have it. Walking pneumonia, which has also been called atypical pneumonia because it's different from the typical bacterial pneumonia, is common in teens and is often caused by a tiny microorganism known as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. Like the typical bacterial pneumonia, walking pneumonia can also be treated with antibiotics.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms?
There are many symptoms of pneumonia, and some of them, like a cough or a sore throat, are associated with many other common infections. Often, people get pneumonia after they've had an upper respiratory tract infection like a cold.

Symptoms of pneumonia can include:

fever
chills
cough
unusually rapid breathing
wheezing
difficulty breathing
chest or abdominal pain
loss of appetite
exhaustion
vomiting

In any case, you should see your doctor. These things don't often go away on their own. You are probably in need of some antibiotics.

You need to go see a doctor. A persistent cough with yellowish phlegm is a sign of an infection. You could have pneumonia and not know it (there is such a thing as "walking pneumonia". Having pain in the chest could be just from the stress of coughing or it could be a sign of more serious problems. The only way to know for sure is to seek medical attention. Chances are an antibiotic will clear it up.

I used to have a cough that wouldn't go away. Finally I asked my Doctor about it and he said I had GERD or acid reflux. He prescribed Aciphex for me and eventually my cough went away. He also recommended staying away from spicy foods, coffee, colas, alcohol, citrus foods, onions and tomato products, all which can aggravate acid reflux. I have since stopped taking the medication and don't over do the above foods (I found that onions, alcohol, too much soda and coffee are what triggered it for me and sometimes lemonade.) I didn't have mucus, so don't know if what you have is acid reflux or something else. If you are experiencing pain in your chest though, don't mess around - see a Doctor.

Sometimes a chronic cough can mean acid reflux. If you know you do not have asthma then you may want to try an antacid pill such as Prilosec or Ranitidine. These are both sold over the counter. If that does not help then see a Dr.

You might have an infection in your lungs. I had similar problem with a cough that lasted several months. Finally after 2 weeks of antibiotics, plus Nasonex, Albuterol and Advair It was gone. I am allergic to a type of antibiotics so in place of the 'good' ones he gave me Advair.

There has got to be something to this. I know 3 other people dealing with this in my neighborhood.

Well, first, have you seen your doctor?? If not, you need too, so many things can cause a cough. Post nasal drip, dry air, allergies (you can get them at any age), even some medications have coughing listed as a side effect.

Good luck

Your continued coughing can be a more serious problem. Have you been tested for TB or pneumonia? Seek the advice of your family physician.
