I was thinking of getting a Persian or Himalayan cat and I wanted to know what they are like from people who have them. How is their temparament? Are they high maintence? Are they sociable, ie. do they come out often or do they sleep all day?

My parents have both. The Persian rocks and is one of the coolest cats I have ever met. The Himalayan is evil... 100% pure evil. It won't rest until it has eaten a small child.

I have a part Himalayan Persian cat. She was very mean for the first 5 or 6 years of owning her but she had a very rough start in life and was very abused by previous owners so I can't count that towards her breed. She is now a loving lap cat that loves to be petted and played with - yes she still plays at 7 human years old. She is high maintanence, any long hair cat will be. They have to be brsuhed once to twice daily to prevent matting in their hair. As mean as she as always been to people, she has always been pretty sociable with other animals. At first she was stand-offish but after the first few days, she was fine. We have another cat and 2 dogs and she does fine with them.

I have had two Persians. One, whom I got free, was horrible - scratched my ankles every time she could and would hardly let me touch her. Unfortunately, she was teased by the neighborhood children when she was little. She lived to be 19 and was just as ornery and hyper when she was 19 as when she was younger. I am not sure whether she was 100% Persian.

The other, who was a registered purebred Persian, was my all-time favorite cat. She didn't like to be held except when she came up to me and asked for it but she was never mean to anyone. She was positively regal and gorgeous - everyone who came to my house was entranced by her. When I had groups of students to my house, she would go up to each of my guests and sit quietly at their feet until they noticed her and then she would move on to the next one. She was a silver-shaded Persian.

A Persian is absolutely high maintenance and so is a Himalayan, which is just a Persian with Siamese features.

I presently have a Ragdoll cat and she is ideal - very little maintenance, not a picky eater, loves attention, purrs loudly, is very loving and loves to be petted. She has what appears at first to be long hair but it is really medium in length and does not readily tangle.

Good luck with your new cat. I have enjoyed each cat I have had, even the mean one!

I had a Persian cat for 16 years. She was beautiful, but not very social. She did not like to be held. Most of the time, when we would have company, she hid in the basement. She was affectionate in some ways though; she loved to "rub heads" with me, and she loved to be scratched under her chin. She purred all the time, and had her own adorable way of showing her love. If you get one, I would recommend only having that one cat, or, if you would like more, get two together. My Persian was like the Queen of the house, and she did not take kindly to the other cats we got after her. Overall, Persians and Himalayans are some of the most gorgeous breeds of cats...you just have to decide if it is the right breed for you. If you have any other questions, please feel free to email me. :)

I've had a few persians and they are cute cuddly fur balls but they are truly high maintenance. You need to brush them DAILY, and you will have visible pet hair all over your clothing, carpet.

I never had Himalayan,
