Why is it that when you point a direction to a dog, they look in that direction. But if you were to point with a cat they just stare at you like you're crazy?

I totally understand what you're saying. I've had dogs and I currently have two cats. I'm not sure but I'll take a guess. I've noticed this before, and the fact that dogs just always seem warmer around people. Like, they always want your attention and they're loving and loyal. Where cats seem like they want to be left alone most of the time and will only be loving when they feel like it. It has been scientifically proven that the bigger an animal's brain the more capable it is of social interaction. That's why humans usually live in large groups of people and just interact with each other so much more socially than say cats or dogs. I don't exactly know if this part would be true, this is just my assumption and it may sound weird, but I would say it's because dogs have larger brains than cats. The bigger the brain the more capacity they have to perform different functions. I mean, you can't say you haven't noticed that when you try to talk to your cat it usually doesn't respond to many words. While dogs on the other hand can recognize up to 200 words and are good at learning commands. But really, this is something that I've just thought about and applied to pieces of information that I already knew. I'm also prefer dogs to cats so it may also be a little biased. I really think it does have some scientific truth to it though.

they dont get it, they just see you stick your arm out. My dog looks at my hand. I had a really smart dog who would look and go to the direction where I pointed most times, he was always hunting and I was always throwing rocks and kicking them, he learned pointing very easily. He was a very clever dog.

Dogs are wanting to see what you are pointing at. They want to please you and they also want to see if you are pointing some food out to them or if you just want them to "fetch" something.Cats, on the other hand, could care less what you are pointing out to them because they don't plan on retrieving whatever it is you are pointing out to them anyways.

So, the reason dogs respond to pointing and cats don't respond to pointing all boils down to their temperament and their innate characteristics. They are the way God made them, pure and simple!

Because they are smart and over time learn that when you point, it means something. I can point to my puppy's kennel and she will automatically go in it.
