The bigger problem is, when i use the DVI/HDMI cables i have to switch my TV over to HDMI/DVI input. I do not recieve any audio. Do i now need optical cable for sound, or is there a way to recieve audio with the basic red/white audio cables?

If you have a surround sound receiver, then you want to use optical or coax audio cable. Red/white RCA cables will only provide you stereo. The optical and coax cables will provide you digital surround sound.
