I've often wondered if it applies to typing.

A vow is like an oath. You give your work to do or not to do something. Silence. Not talking. Usually done by religious people. It is to have all that time to become attuned to God. In Little miss sunshine. The kid had a goal and thought if he did not talk he would remember the goal. I did not get his reasoning.

There are as many motivations for taking a vow of silence as their are people taking the vows.
If you want to know about the movie, go here, however IT IS a Spoiler site, so you were warned!

Some religious groups (nuns or monks) may take a vow of silence because if they remain quiet, they are more open to hear what God is saying to their hearts. They are not silent all the time; just certain hours of the day. When you're silent, you have a lot more time to THINK, to CONTEMPLATE, to find what God wants of you.

vow of silence is a promise made usually to the virgin mary. In my home town in spain there are still some people who do it...they ask for something to the virgin (they have a strong tradition - i wont say spiritual belief- in the virgin)...If the thing they ask for is accomplished then they spend sometime without talking. Is just a nonsense.

In many cases the vow of silence is a gun to your head, that's good motivation to me.

James 3:5
Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

it's like a way of peaceful protest i guess??
Many people do things (like hunger strike) as a means of disagreeing with an injustice - peacefully!
