You now know that he was born in Holland and when. He sold one painting while alive through his brother Theo. In 1990 his Portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for $127 million.

"After having failed as an art dealer and a Protestant evangelist, Van Gogh decided at the age of 27 to become an artist. He received a smattering of formal education, but mostly, with singular feverishness and dedication, studied and practiced on his own. In his 33rd year he moved to Paris, blossoming into a brilliant colorist. Two years later he moved south to Arles, producing bold, bright paintings and drawings at a miraculous rate. He started suffering bouts of insanity. He moved north to Auvers, near Paris, continuing to paint wonderfully. He killed himself at the age of 37. He and his brother Theo who had supported him financially and emotionally throughout his career had been able to sell only one painting while he was still alive." Vincent wrote to his brother, Theo, often. The letters are autobiographical and were compiled into a book, Dear Theo by the writer, Irving Stone, who also wrote a biography of Vincent, Lust for Life, which was made into a movie starring Kirk Douglas in 1956.
Dear Theo,
A great deal of what I read in your letter I certainly appreciate very much, for instance, `One must be narrow-minded or hypocritical to set one class without question above another.'
When I go out, I often make sketches in the soup kitchens or in the third-class waiting room, and such places. But outside it is so deuced cold, especially for me, as I do not draw as quickly as the more advanced, and must finish my sketches in more detail if they are to be of any use.
