NyQuil will knock you out. Make sure you have 8 hrs though. I would say you ll be asleep within 35 min. Plus if you have the sniffles you'll wake up better.

While it is best not to take anything at all, there are times when a little something to make you drowsy helps. If you do not wish to talk to your doctor and want an over the counter med, 25mg of diphenhydramine (Benadryl) is effective. It is the active ingredient in Tylenol PM, AdvilPM, and most OTC nighttime preparations. You can get the sleep effect without needlessly taking acetaminophen or ibuprofen compounds. Benadryl is an anti-histamine and used in cold meds. A major side effect is drowsiness, which is why its used in nighttime preparations. While it is not habit forming , you can become tolerant with frequent use and it no longer will help.

First of all there is nothing wrong with taking a sleeping pill every once in a while for a good nights rest so ignore everyone else. I must agree with the Tylenol pm the liquid vanilla is amazing. Take the recommended dose and you are out 30 min tops and best part is you don't wake up groggy. it is safe and non habit forming.

Try valerian a natural extract fro the herb of that name. Available from most chemists..it's non-addictive and will give you a satisfying relaxing non-hangover sleep. But consult your GP first esp if you are taking any other meds which could cause side-effects (it's also available in products like 'Kalms' which you can buy over the counter from any Chemist)

I have taken a few and while I did sleep, I was groggy and tired all the next day.
But if you must, Tylenol PM does put you to sleep.

Don’t you ever dare to take sleeping pills: you shall regret it. If there is a problem you cannot sleep simply go to the doctor’s but do not ever take pills even if the doctor gives them to you (and I know this sort of a contradiction). My mother used to have them every so often and I did not have a good experience about it. Whatever the problem, whatever the situation you might have to go through, please don't do pills.

i have always had trouble sleeping at times. i've tried a few over the counter sleep aids and the best one by far is ADVIL PM. works so much better than tylenol pm. be careful not to take them too often, as you will become dependent on them .

if you are talking about the over the counter meds anything that is just for sleep and not for combination problems are best if it is just insomnia but the prescription meds that are the best are the controlled release because when you use controlled release it gradually goes into your system and it lasts longer where the other digests all at once and you get it all at once....ask the pharmacist which over the counter product is time released>>> they can always help answer your questions>>>>

Everyone is different. What works for one person will either not work or make you feel groggy after waking. A pharmacist should be able to make a fair recommendation they are trained in the field of medicines.
My husband likes to use Benidryl and I like Chlortab. We both have hay fever and this works well for us. His Benidryl does not work for me.

Try Tylenol PM. I would take a small dose and take it earlier in the evening to prevent drowsiness in the morning. Be careful not to take them too often though.
