Believe it or not, this is a very difficult question to answer. The reason is that it's almost impossible to determine what an average American is.
Even within he same income level, with various income credits and deductions that an individual may be able to take, along with how many children (depentents) they can claim, there is an entire range of taxes to be paid.
Also, are you speaking of taxes as in April 15th, or are you speaking of total taxes? We all pay sales tax, but some people (home owners) also pay property taxes, and others pay varied taxes depending on their investment portfolio.
But with this, I was able to find some "basic" numbers.
For the middle 5th quintile (middle income level) a gov't agency found that state and local taxes averaged out to be 10.1% of income, and that federal tax came out to 19.7% of income. So between the two, for a two wage earner family the percentage comes out to about 30% of earnings.

Approximately 21 -23 % of their income depending on filing status.
Everyone complainsabout paying to much in taxes but in reality years ago a single person paid about 27 % and now the average is 23%

Between 20 and 30 %.... though many people write things off when it is tax time. It would be fun to save your pay checks for a year and see how much is deducted in total.

33% of my energy bill is taxes & fees, 50% of my home phone bill is taxes & fees. Not sure about gas, but I know it is high. Your dog license is a tax. License plates? Tax. My guess is that if you really tracked all the hidden taxes and fees that encumber your life it would be around 60% of what you earn.
