That's the government for you.
I'm a senior in high school and we had a class where they taught us how to apply for loans and I didn't even mess with it.I know since my parents are in that middle income bracket that I won't be able to get a penny probably so there is no point wasting my time.
And with what I plan on doing,I might not have time for a job to help during college and that makes me feel horrible.

Go to a community college, they are way more affordable for the normal American the a University that is just scaming you. Half of those who attend University do not even know why they are there, they just think that they have to be there. Or it's "what you do".

You can get a 2 year degree for under 8000 and at a university that would be about 30000 for just 2 years. Waste of money.

Do you live with your parent or parents? If you live with a parent and are not 24 years old you are automatically considered a dependent. They count you and your parent(s) total household income as a major factor.

If you live on your own for 12 months you are considered independent. ( i don't think you can be enrolled in college during this time but maybe it has to do more about if your parent(s) can claim you as a dependent.) This makes a huge difference for financial aid for college. When I moved out on my own when in college I qualified for a lot of financial aid. I find it hard to believe that if you are considered financially independent you could not get help for financial aid. I was offered a lot of money (15K a year) in scholarships and loans to finish college because I was 27 and financially independent. ( at a college where tuition was only 3k a year, the rest was for living expenses.) And I was single with no children.

I would consult with the financial aid department. They were very helpful to me.

When the government set up funds for financial aid they chose to give it to those that are most needy so if you are able to pay your bills you are not in the most needy category and they will offer you loans. On the flip side those students who are so needy they receive state or federal assistance are required to put a lot of that income onto the FAFSA so they in tern are not eligible for as much as if they did not receive the government aid (and the government aid will use financial aid as income as well if they receive over the cost of tuition and books).
