Is it normal for the vet to detect poop that looks like puppies?? He said it looked like poop because the images seemed linked together, and that he couldn't tell. It was only 20days since mating. I am going back to get another in a week or two but has anyone encountered this problem?

she has a doggie door and goes when she needs to, so im not sure if she did or not. When we got home she went in the yard to poop but is it that hard to tell puppies from poop?

She acts like she is pregnant, almost all of the early signs, but i have heard you cant detect with an ultrasound until 25-40 days and hers was at 20 days. they wouldnt have backbones yet.

I wanted to find out if she is pregnant before 40days so i can make sure she eats well and gets routine vet checks to make sure everything goes well. I guess I am going to get another ultrasound in a week or two but how much do X-rays cost once she is 40days?

Hi Kyla K!!
Earliest method of pregnancy detection ultrasound -- a nice test because it is noninvasive and very reliable. Fetal heartbeats can be detected at around the 25th day from first breeding.
If your vet is can't see Fetal heartbeats.... most likely your dog have False Pregnancy.
Most experienced veterinarians can determine pregnancy by simply feeling the dog's abdomen during a certain a window of time -- about 20-30 days after conception. During this time period, there is uterine swelling around the placental sites that feels like firm and discrete lumps. After 30 days, the uterine swelling is more diffuse and it is difficult to distinguish the gravid uterus from the feel of the intestinal tract. Dogs that are very large or obese may be difficult to examine in any stage, however.
Also, existent A third way to detect pregnancy is by taking x-rays. Fetal skeletons can be visualized at about 45 days of pregnancy. This test cannot be done until late in gestation.
It is a good idea to plan a general health check with your veterinarian around day 30-45 of gestation. An ultrasound or an x-ray can be taken later to confirm pregnancy. This should be done since your dog that is, show all the signs of pregnancy (abdominal distention, nipple enlargement, even milk production). Ultrasound and radiographs can also determine the number of puppies and sometimes tell if there may be any complications during delivery.

The puppies will have diffentative backbones and be much lower on the animal the poop would be. I would find it rather strange for a vet to not really know this. Its possible that the x-ray was not light enough to be able to define them. It has only been 20 days but still you would/should be able to see some visible signs of backbones and skulls at this time. Is she acting like she is pregnant??
I'm sorry I misread ultrasound. That can be a very hard way to detect that early. But best to make sure she does go to the bathroom before doing another US. Also a x-ray would probably help you out as it gives another more 2-d picture intsead of a 3d one. I'll leave my fist response if you do decide to do an x-ray.

yes it's difficult to properly detect puppies on ultrasound until 30-35 days into the pregnancy. but ultrasound is not accurate in counting pups at all. for that you can have your dog x-rayed after 55 days gestation.

I am not sure because I use x-rays on my dogs, not ultrasound. I would wait until after her 45th day of gestation and have her x-rayed. They are not always 100% accurate on the number of puppies, but you will know for sure if they are pregnant or not.

unless the vet was drunk then he was telling you what it look like and it has been know to happen before that it was p**p and it takes a 35 week ultrasound to really get a good reading. so when you go back and he tells you the same then find his bottle and pour it down the drain and go so another vet.

Didn't he detect the heart or other organs? If he isn't more helpful on your next visit I would suggest getting another vet.
