One danger here is to find yourself getting too caught up in all the current hysteria surrounding ADD. As an adult who continues to deal with it, I can assure you that it is a "real thing"and not some evil plot made up by drug companies, or people who simply want to suppress childhood exuberance. And even though it may indeed be over-diagnosed, at the same time, if you think about the potential difficulties that could come from problems with concentration, and troubles with impulsiveness, it's something at least worth thinking about.
One thing that might help you decide is to let him do a trial period of meds, and then allow the both of you to decide for yourselves what you think of it.
If it seems to offer no real advantage, then....you have made your decision, and can go on from there.
If it seems to make a big difference, in a positive direction, then that gives you something to think about as well.
ADD drugs may indeed require more study as to their long term side effects, but at the same time, it's not like they are some kind of deadly poison.
If you truly want to see if they might help.....it would not hurt to give them a try, and then allow the two of you decide for yourselves.

As someone who was diagnosed with a learning disability 20 years ago, when it was not usually talked about, I advise the following. Get a few different opinions from some doctors. Then make a decision from there. Not all kids need medication. There are behavior modifications. There are even medications for ADD that are used as a patch.
On a personal basis, I had trouble making friends due to my ADD/hyperactivity. Dealing with the ADD now will help him in his future years as well as his present years if he has trouble in social situations. No one can predict the future. You're experience as a teenager is yours. Everyone's life is different. You sound like a great mother. Go do some research yourself. Medication isn't always the answer. It varies from person to person.

i know how you feel - i went through the same thing with my son - he is 8 now. i took him to a therapist and they did some phsycological evals and things like that and he now has a TSS worker that comes to our house a few times a week and works with him. she does things that help him learn how to focus, control anger, etc. i am against medication unless its really needed - i think you should explore some other alternatives before you try the meds, especially if you dont want to - go with your gut feeling!! my son still has a hard time once in a while but nobody is perfect - this method has really been helpful to my son. if you do decide to go with meds check all your options -dont just take one- there are many different types of meds. good luck to you and your son.

i think that's all the school system know to say to parents when the teachers refuse to perform in the training they received on how to keep control in the classroom. kids are not animals - they starve for attention though, and the school system is suppose to know how to give it to them properly so that they won't have to get it in a negative way. i don't know when adult teachers will take the time to figure it out. our kids don't really seem to be important to them. it seems anymore that their mindset is that teaching is just a job - it pays the bills.

Put him on the medicine. There are many other natural types of medicines you could give your son. But, ADD is being overdiagnosed. Kids can focus on television, can't they?
