I got blood work done by my Internal Medicine Doctor and he said that I'm allergic to Wheat, Eggs and Dairy. Does the "dairy" pertain to just cow milk products? or does it cover sheep and goat too?

Being allergic to dairy products is not the same as lactose intolerance.

Milk or dairy allergy is a food allergy, an adverse immune reaction to a food protein that is normally harmless to the non-allergic individual. Lactose intolerance is a non-allergic food hypersensitivity: it is due to the deficiency of the enzyme lactase, which is required to digest the predominant sugar in milk.

Casein is a protein that is in diary. It is naturally produced by cows, sheep and goats. If you are allergic to diary you also have a casein food allergy. If you are allergic to dairy (casein) you must avoid foods containing, cow’s milk, goat’s milk, and foods that have casein added to them. Read your labels to avoid foods with casein.

A home test of lactose intolerance can be done on someone by having the person follow these steps:

Drink two cups of milk on an empty stomach and watching for signs of intestinal discomfort over the next several hours.

The following day, eat two ounces of hard cheese or drink two cups of lactose-free milk.

If symptoms are experienced only on the first day, the person being tested may be lactose-intolerant. If symptoms are experienced on both days, the person may have an allergy to dairy products, which is unrelated to lactose intolerance.

Wheat allergy is a type of food allergy. It is a hypersensitivity to dietary substances from wheat, causing an overreaction of the immune system which may lead to severe physical symptoms for millions of people in the United States. It occurs in children and adults. It is usually treated with an exclusion diet and vigilant avoidance of foods that may be contaminated with wheat.

Egg allergy is also a type of food allergy. It is a hypersensitivity to dietary substances from the yolk or whites of eggs, causing an overreaction of the immune system which may lead to severe physical symptoms for millions of people in the United States. It occurs mainly, but not exclusively, in children. It is treated the same as a wheat allergy by an exclusion diet and vigilant avoidance of foods that may be contaminated with egg.

Hope this helps.

Being allergic to Dairy is not same as being Lactose Intolerant. Some people have commented about lactose intolerance instead of dairy allergies. They are not the same. My son is allergic to Dairy. He can not have any cheese, yogurt, ice cream, milk of any kind. He also can not have processed food because it has milk proteins in it and so does a lot of vegan cheese, etc. You really must read labels. Milk is in a lot of stuff.

Being sensitive to dairy products means items containing Lactose. Lactose is found in milk... breast milk as well. I am not sure if goat or sheep milk has lactose but I would assume it does. Best bet, ask your doctor.

I'm sure that dairy is any milk or milk product. Clear it with the same doctor who said you were allergic.

If you have lactase deficiency you shouldn't eat goat and sheep milk, all milks have lactose but some of them have less , You should use lactose free products.
