First, get a travel crate. Put your cats regular bedding into the crate for a few days before you plan to leave on the trip. This will cause her to try out the crate when it is not threatening to her. By the time you leave on the trip, she might be more comfortable in her travels. Make sure the crate is big enough for a litter box and water. An 8 hour trip is short enough that your cat may safely refuse to poop, drink or eat. They tend to do that if unsettled.

Next, NEVER open the car door if the cat is not in the crate. Cats can slip out the door, take off and just keep on running from fright in a foreign area. I almost lost a cat by chasing it when she slipped out the car door after I arrived at my new home. She was gone for three weeks before showing up at our front door. (I had left her food dish and our old door mat outside the front door and she came back to the familiar smell.)

If she cries, just keep talking to her, sing to her, etc. If you really feel she needs comforting, you can stop (in a safe, well lighted area with lots of people) and pet her being careful to keep the doors shut and windows up while she is out of the carrier.

Please remember, some cats love to see where they are and some like to hide. Give your cat the type of view (or cover) she individually needs.

Start getting her used to being in the cat carrier before the trip. Put some soft blankets and treats in it then she will feel more comfortable when the time comes for the actual trip. Good luck.

Take her for test rides in the car in a carrier so she can get used to riding in the car. If she's stressed out you should talk to the vet about giving her a sedative. You have to be careful with those, though.
