Im itialian and so are my parents, but my girlfriend of 8 months is hatian. My italian parents have no idea I am with her, i always lie about what i am doing when i am going to go see her. We care about each other very much, however my parents always have some sort of racial prejudice, and when i bring up the situation hypothetically with them, they always react very negatively. "I wouldnt hate you but i would wish you would pick someone in your own race. good thing this is just a hypothetical". I feel guilty for lying to them and i want them to accept this on some level. Any ideas?

If you are serious about this girl, then you should introduce her to your parents. Before you bring her over, though, explain to them that you really like her and tell them what characteristics she has that you really like. Also explain to them why you felt the need to hide the relationship from the beginning. Hopefully, they can get to know your girlfriend as a person, and overcome some of their prejudices.

It's a horrible thing to have to choose between your family and your girlfriend (perhaps future wife. it sounds like y'all are serious) You say that you care about this girl very much. If that is true, then you have to be willing to stand up and act like you're not ashamed to be with her. And that may very well alienate your family, at least for a while. Unfortunatly you can't force them to accept your girlfriend. But in this particular situation, their stance is WRONG, and so are you when you try to hide it. All you can do is take the leap and trust that your family loves you enough to stick by you.

If you have been with her already for 8 months, I am surprised that your parents have not already been informed about the relationship from someone else. It sounds like you two may be serious and although you do not want to tell your parents and more than likely there will be a scene, it still should come from you instead of them hearing it from someone else.

It sounds like you live at home with your parents. If you do, you have an obligation to respect their feelings about interracial relationships. You also have an obligation to tell the truth. So you can either tell them about your girlfriend and see if you can get their blessing to date her, or you can move out on your own and do whatever you want.

you should be honest and tell them you care for her and her race doesn't matter and that is all that counts. what counts is on the inside.right?
