Hello, Since you didn't mention your dog being aggressive I would ignore the people who suggested putting him to sleep. (no offense to anyone) As for the water thing - some dogs just really hate water and I would recommend taking him to a groomer - it like $20 at Petco/Petsmart- and since you are a little bit afraid of him, I would definately recommend not doing it yourself. Next, you sound like you really need some proffessional help with him for training and being confident in him. First, is he neutered? If not, call the vet right now and have it done. That will help. If he is then look in the phone book for a dog trainer or call the local animal shelter and ask for a recommendation. Petsmart has dog training but I don't know if they work with pits or if you are having any agression issues definately talk to a private trainer. If you cannot afford a trainer then I recommend talking to your local shelter about your options.. They may know of someone who can do lower cost training or may be help you find an appropriate home for your dog. I definately recommend getting a halti for your dog if he is as strong as you say. It will give you A LOT more control over him when you walk him etc. It is very difficult for a dog to pull when you have control of their head and this is what the halti gives you. However, I would recommend reading the insert that comes with it or consult a trainer to teach you how to use the halti. (If you order the halti online it is much cheaper than in a pet store) OK I probably shouldn't go on for too much longer or you are going to get confused. All in all consult a professional for advice and help. Good luck.

You should take him to a professional dog groomer. They don't charge too much just for a bath. They know how to handle dogs and you find that the dog is way better behaved with the groomer than it is at home. When you try to bath them they know what they can get away with. If worse comes to worse the groomer will put a muzzle on him if they are worried that the dog will bite them or something but other wise they don't even need one. Your pooch will get lots of love and special attention with the groomer along with lots of special doggy treats. Give a few a call in your local area and see what they have to offer for the price that they charge. I know what you mean by him being so strong, i have an American Staffy and he is HUGE!!! i can pretty much put a saddle on him and go for a ride. He used to be scared of water until one time when my partner and i took him camping, he sort of got over his fear. He went a little into the water but not too far, then only about a week ago we went to the beach and he came and he loved it!! He now loves the water and it is a huge battle to get him out again. You should try and make it fun for him, like try getting in the water with him and stuff. Maybe even you go first and give him lots of treats the closer to the water that he gets.
Your doggy will be fine and good luck with him.

because your dog is so large and you are afraid of him, take him to a groomer. They will muzzle him first as a precaution. As for you being afraid of him its time for you to get the top dog spot back by training him all over again and teach him some new things as well. The time you spend training him should bring you back closer and you will regain his trust. You need to do it now before it becomes a real problem. Such a large mix breed will probably be put down if you take it to a shelter because you cant handle it anymore.

You could check with your vet and ask what he/she would suggest being that the vet knows your dog. There are some shampoos that require no water. This might be a start. Otherwise slowly start introducing you dog to water. Let him know that it's safe and he shouldn't be scared. Try letting him see you take a bath and enjoying being in the water. Try anything!

At Petco, we have a type of serum called Calm something, and it makes the dog calm down when getting into stressful situations like car rides, baths, etc. It really is a life saver for some people, but every dog is different! I think you will notice results with it!

Your dog might be having some past issues with water. Neither the pitbull or rot are known as huge water dogs. Since they both have such short hair, it might be that the water is too cold for him. My recommendation would be to first tire him out. Get another dog that he plays with. Make sure he has emptied his bowels, and practice your sit/stay command. You are probably going to need some help. One person to do the scrubbing and one person to give him treats for staying. I hope the best for you!

Get a few boxes of baking soda. Just plain old baking soda, in the baking aisle at the grocery store.
Take him outside and sprinkle it on him. Use lots. Rub it in and brush it out with a stiff bristle brush.
No water, no problem. Baking soda has great cleaning abilities and removes odors.
You will be pleased.
There is also "waterless" shampoos, or plain old shaving cream. They have to be rinsed out tho. Put them on, tie him up out side and hose it off. A little mean, and won't make him like (or trust) you, but he will be clean.
Consider obedience training. It will teach you how to train him without driving you both nuts.
Good luck

Try using a kid pool, the plastic type at the local store. Walk him into it and use a cup or sponge to wet him. You can also use wet towels to wash him down. I am sure at some point in his life he was squirted in the face with a hose which could have created his fear of the hose. Most dogs are not afraid of water, its the hose the gets them going.

If your words are in fact true, you have the duty to put your dog into the sleep that leads to death. If he attacks you and gets loose, you could not control him. So all who come into your dogs spear are at risk. Children, old people, every one. And with this out there on the web, you will be sitting in jail. Get up off your Heine and call a vet.
