Yes, but there is still much debate on whether the pros outweigh the cons. This can lead to other systemic infections rather than a sore throat since the tonsils trap bacteria before entering your esophagus and lungs. Talk to a few doctors before having it done. I almost had the surgery, but talked it out with a few doctors and decided it wasn't worth the risk. No need really. If you have large tonsils gargle with listerine twice a day for 30 seconds.

no not true unfortunatly. I have my tonsils out and have gotten strep 4 times. Before I had them out I had never had strep I just had soar throats. Tonsils coming out to help with soar throats though! And don't belive the guy about having your tonsils out are bad for you, that's the most ridiculous thing I have herd. I have never herd of a Dr telling someone that it's bad to have them out. If it's bad then how come over 60% of the population has them out. My cousin and his wife are dr.'s, I just called and asked them about this and they said no!

I have been wishing they would take my tonsils out for that very reason! My doctor told me that yes, you will have fewer strep/throat infections afterward. As it is now, I get it three times a year!!! I hope it works out for you.

It's very likely you won't get as many but you can still get them as strep throat affects the throat more than the tonsils.

There are people that suffer from chronic strep throat infections and they usually get kissing tonsils. That's when your tonsils get so swollen that they touch and it makes it very hard to breath and it hurts to swallow. That's when the doctor usually suggests to have them removed. It eliminates throat infections of that sort.

having your tonsils taken out as an adult is risky. Much more risky than as a child. I had a major case of a throat infection when I was about 8, enlarging my tonsils permanently. So large that one burst many years ago, had to have it cauterized.
As we age into adulthood, it's normal for tonsils to gradually shrink and thank goodness, mine are. But they have swollen so large at times that holes have broken in them and particles of food often get trapped and I have to gag myself to get the stuff out.
My fiance is a few years younger than I am and his tonsils aren't even noticeable, but mine still are.
I have talked to my doc about having them taken out, but the risks outweigh the benefits at my age (late 30').
