he's not dumb. first stop thinking that or you're not going to get anywhere with him. now i believe some dogs are slower than others, meet my rottie mix. she's on the short bus most of the time. but he's not untrainable. how have you tried to work with him? do you just yell at him? are you consistant with him everytime your correct him? have you taken him to training and talked with a trainer at length about the trouble you're having? do you regularly exercise him and walk him at least twice a day? try all of those things. and keep your patience. if you're frustrated, he's going to be too. he went from doing his own thing and now you expect all kinds of things out of him. he can do it, you just have to show him how in a way that he understands. plus he's 5 years old. he can be trained, just not as fast as a younger pup will learn. it's very important you are consistant, you and your fiancee, and very patient. good luck.

Well you certainly have a challenge on your hands.
Treat him as you would a puppy with his training. And be KIND, KIND, KIND!!! Any dog can learn new tricks! I adopted my lil guy from the animal rescue league and he learned the rules I wanted him to.
But it took a LOT of time on my part and a LOT of time on HIS as well. You have to watch and praise him every step of the way just as you would a puppy. You are going to have to shadow him! Seriously. And kindly correct his errors.
The tone of your question kind of seems like you don't really want an inside dog. Trust me---your dog will pick that up and you are sabatoging yourself. If you are not open minded to helping your dog and actually act out on learned recommendations, then you can expect the worst.
Sorry...but that's my answer and I'm sticking to it...

I think the only thing "dumb" around your place is a) you and b) your fiancee for being with you.
You should have trained the dog when he was young instead of keeping him outside and isolated from learning house manners.

I laughed at that guy... the reason canines "in effortless words hear once you've a manage" is because you should commence to take the manage OUT of the equation. I actual have educated my wolf/akita/husky fantastically a lot completely(very few issues he would not want to get rid of like leaping, that is my fault besides), with and without treats. And to me, treats will be something. foodstuff and toys. some days he prefers foodstuff, some days he prefers toys. And regrettably, there are not many operating shoes around the position I stay(subsequently why i visit college to develop into one), so i have never any "dumbest practise approach" thoughts to percentage, except that guy... i do not imagine only a "good canines" and a pat continuously works... some canines are too foodstuff-oriented to take heed to a pat, and could nonetheless go after that cheesburger. Labs i recognize get distracted actual. This couple has a fantastic lab named Daisy, and that i think soooo accountable because we will be on the park, and they're going to stroll by technique of, and she or he runs into the gate and she or he and my canines commence taking section in. She performs for a at the same time as, yet she does go again to them, that is nice. in effortless words once my canines said her out, yet he also got here again, fortunately. My canines is amazingly human beings-oriented, so if he does run off, I in simple terms ought to run in the different direction and he's barreling in direction of me. that is hilarious observing him run, regardless of the reality that. besides. That guy sounds like he's a fantastically agency believer, yet, yeah, fantastically dumb suggestion. i am going to persist with treats.
