Currently France is also engaged undermining its own historical identity due to a somewhat disproportiate growth and influence of the extreme right-wing - led by poeple like Le Pen- on the immigration issue and citizenship laws.It is also true that all overwestern Europe, swarms of desperate, impoverished and environmental refugees are pouring in fraudulently, illegally simply because their original place of belonging, such as north Arican countries, have nothing. Poverty is theroot cause of illegal immigration, carried out by crooks and pimps under terrible and suffocating conditions.Immigrants come byovercrowded boats, refrigerated container trucks because they think it is worth the risk.France is a preferred destination, even though immigrants cannot or refuse to accept the French notions of republicanism, liberty and secularism. At the same time, language is not a barrier. Not all Francophils of the world are attracted towards France.
However, your individual case seems different. If you have a permanent job, or, matrimonially/generically linked, accept the basic tenets of the contitution, having lived in France according to laws that govern, including the time-line required for obtaining citizenship, have been to schools or collages for study then you would qualify implicitly.Only formalities have to be completed since French bureaucracy is rigid about them. But France is no longer the centre of old Europe and the currency is no longer the same. To be wise and future oriented I suggest that you tackle this issue from Brussels, the centre of European Union.Europe has become wide angled, with shengen, without borders, etc.

Hello Geisha,

The last answer covers most of it for sure, but you need to be aware that recent rules in applying for citizenship. You will need to be able to speak a good french and it time make a commitment to speak it as a born French person, to be able to contribute to the economic growth ( not applying to get benefits but to work and contribute to the French society), to know a basic lines of the country's History ( you will have to take a test) and finally know the National Anthem.
You are not the first person to ask this question this week and I am appalled with the amount of abuse left by users hiding being their pseudos, who do not have a clue about the world out there and the rich contribution that other culture has had over the centuries on their own.
I am french and proud of it.
Sorry for rambling.
