I am a long distance cross country runner, my best times are:
3 miles: 19.20
2 miles: 12.00
1 mile: 5.57
If I want to improve my times and have just started swimming on a swim team will this help my endurance and running times? Also which is a better exercise that burns more calories and works more muscles?

Anything that maintains a high heart rate and lung volume is excellent. Plus your body doesn't take a pounding like it does when you run.
A friend uses swimming as a cool down for all of her weight lifting and running workout for her real passion. I tried it and it really is a more relaxing way to stress your heart and lungs. Mixing up a lot of types of workouts keeps you from getting bored, you meet lots of dedicated athletes and you never know when you're going to learn something new while you train.

swimming may help your running because when you swim, you use every muscle in the body, particularly your legs and abs. Sometimes you see a giant help, others not so much. For me it only helped my endurance, not so much my time.
