There are only a few secrets to making that scrumptious corn at home.

The first is to use Coconut oil. Any health food store will sell non-hydrogenated Coconut oil that is *very* healthy! Coconut oil got an undeserved bad rap because what was tested was the hydrogenated stuff and it's full of trans-fat and long-chain saturated fat. Real Coconut oil has no trans-fat and consists of short-chain saturated fat that LOWERS the bad LDL cholesterol and it is used by the body to repair damage to the nervous system!
The second secret is Flavacol! It's a popcorn salt that has a non-dairy butter flavoring added to it. Sometimes you can get a movie theater to sell you some but I provided the link to the company I get it from.
You can use grocery bagged corn or Orville's corn but If you want really big kernels get a bag of the real stuff when you order your Flavacol.
You don't have to buy those $400 poppers but you do need one that stirs the kernels in the oil. You can get a stove-top manual crank but I use a Stir Crazy to do mine. It works as well as the expensive ones (and takes up a lot less space). It makes a bit of a mess but mix the Flavacol into the popper along with the oil and corn.
You'll get the same exact stuff as the theaters that way!

For starters, why does it have to taste the way the movie theatre make it. The theatre's secret is the choices of chemicals with which their flavour their oil mixture. And in all likely hood, they use the high saturated, unhealthy cholesterol producing oils like palm oil and coconut oil, or maybe even good old fashion lard. Who knows what they use. The other secret ingredient is the large amount of salt generally added to the popcorn. (remember - the surgeon general order all food manufacturing and processing companies to cut back the salt by a minimum of 50 percent.)

In my view you are on the right track with making your own popcorn. Just try experimenting with different additives until you find what you like. And there is also those search engine which you can use to find popcorn recipes.

Happy munching.

Get the Presto PowerPop Microwave Multi-Popper
(It's the best popcorn popper that I have ever used!)

Use fresh popcorn kernels....if you have a bag of popping corn kernels that have been sitting around for years, they don't pop very well.

After you pop your popcorn, drizzle it with Poppin and Toppin (I think it's called that) made by Orville Redenbacher (sp?) in the popcorn section of your market.

Sprinkle with fine salt (don't BUY fine salt, just smash regular salt at home with a mortar and pestle or a rolling pin)

YUM!
