We have an almost two year old shar-pei and wanted to know if she would get along well an itailian greyhound and if they were good lapdogs and like to be held, cuddled and loved? Any responses would be great...Thanks!

I had an Italian Greyhound from the time he was a puppy. I also encounted a few of them during the seven years I worked at animal hospitals, and those tended to have the same behavior as my own.

Now I will preface this by saying I loved my dog dearly and would not have traded him in for the world. He was very affectionate with me, and he did get along with any dogs or cats he ever encountered. However, he did have huge problems with nervousness and aggressiveness. It took hundreds of dollars and hours of professional training to correct his behavior problems, and even then he would have relapses of growling and snapping at people (especially strangers.) He was extremely protective of me and would lunge at anyone who tried to touch me (shake hands, hug, etc), even when he knew the person. I would cuddle him, but on occasion he would turn around and snap at me for no discernable reason.

In short, my experience with the breed is that they will get along with other animals, but can be very problematic in terms of human interaction and nervousness. It is a wonderful breed for people who live in quiet homes and who have the patience for a very intelligent but difficult to train dog. Definitely do not get this breed if you have young kids (under 14) in your home.

as long as both dogs are well socialized and trained it won't be a problem. but introduce the dogs to each other slowly. plus it also helps if the sharpei is neutered or spayed. don't just throw the greyhound in a room with the sharpei and expect the sharpei to act friendly. as for them being good lap dogs, it depends. first you need to research the breed and get to know it's basic characteristics and tendencies. talk to a reputable breeder about the breed. if you think you have the time to care for another pup and this is the pup for you then go ahead. realize they are energetic dogs and need exercise like any other dog. walked at least twice daily. just research everything you can on the breed and then if your sharpei is a well socialized well trained dog then go ahead.

Italian greyhounds do make a good lap dog, but its hard for them to fit in the lap....lol They are very affectionate and smart. The ones I have seen get along well with several different breeds.

Italian greyhounds are very fragile dogs...the Sharpei may play too rough with it. Italian greyhounds are very tiny boned and thin skinned and do make good cuddly lap dogs, but the Sharpei might be too rambunctious...not on purpose mind you, but they wouldn't know any better.
