I have 3 week old puppies...the mother is starting to be VERY neglectful...we have to force her just to feed them! I'm not sure what to do anymore, they're teeth are coming in but I know they're still to young to digest regular food. Is there something I can substitute their mother's milk for since she basically doesn't want anything to do with them!? Please help....

They are Great Pyrenees mixed w/ another breed that I can't tell yet! Anyways, the mother is very large which is why it's so hard to force her into feeeding. The puppies are so big for only 3 weeks..

Start bottle feeding.

10 oz. of canned evaporated milk or goat's milk (not pasteurized cow's milk - this will cause scowers - dogs cannot drink normal cow's milk) Goats milk is by far the best to use. Wall Mart sells it.

3 oz. sterilized water (baby water or boiled water) this is not needed if using goat's milk

1 raw egg yolk

1 cup of whole yogurt (avoid skim or fat free if at all possible)

1/2 Tsp Karo Syrup or Corn Syrup (NOT HONEY !!!)

Place ingredients in a blender and blend or use a wire whisk. Be careful to not over blend and create a milk shake full of bubbles and then tube bubbles into the puppy.

Keep cool and discard leftovers after 7 days.

Warm formula to body temperature (dogs are around 101 degrees). Discard any un-used formula. This is a thick mixture - use a stomach tube to tube feed or enlarge the hole in the nipple for easy access for the pup.

You can make this formula at home and it has 11 calories per CC.

The problem with commercial formula that you buy at your vet is that it only has about 1 or 2 calories per CC. In my opinion this is not enough nutrition to provide for for adequate growth.

We have used this formula many many times and it works better than any others that I have tried.

Some people start to add raw hamburger to their bottle feeding formula at about 4 to 4 1/2 weeks of age. I prefer Gerber chicken baby food.

We supplemented puppies once per vet instructions with raw egg yolk and raw hamburger mixed and rolled into little balls. I recently heard that Dogs don't get salmonella because they have a long esophagus and short intestines. The food doesn't stick around long enough. We also used a milk supplement but I don’t remember what that was. My suggestion is to call a couple of veterinarians and they will be happy to give you some advice. Good luck.

You can go to tractor supply and buy some puppy replacement formula. Give this to the puppies every three hours. Read the label to make it, you can also put just a little karo syrup on there gums to keep there sugar levels okay.

I am feeding wet pedigree puppy food (Mixture of yogurt & Pedigree) to my beagle puppies since they were 3 weeks old. now they are in 5th week. They are healthy, happy & very active. They never cry for food & they are pooping in solid form. Most people wouldn't recommend my suggestion but my my pups have no problem yet. Gud Luk to U & Ur Pups.

What breed are they? Try to continue holding the mom down for them to nurse at least one more week. At four weeks of age, you can start them on baby rice cereal mixed with goat's milk.

You will probably have to hold the mother down so she will feed them. Are they a large breed? or what?
