You can't go wrong with the following no matter the sex of the baby:
gift card to walmart, target, toys r us (anywhere with a variety of baby suppliies)
diapers (not newborn because they don't fit for long)
wipes
baby tub
bath supplies (shampoo, wash, lotion, washclothes)
socks
onesies
receiving blankets
spit clothes

For my baby shower the best thing I got was box from a friend. She put a bottle of alieve, a box of tissues, some slippers for me, a chicken soup for the mothers soul,( for the post partum days) a disposable camera for the diaper bag, a phone card so I could call long distance family and friends, a handful of my favorite mints, A what to expetc the first year book, and a homemade coupon book that had redeemable coupons for free house cleaning, babysitting, a homemade dinner, shoulder to cry on ect. , and a lot of cute just very personal touches. She wrapped it in a blanket she made for the baby that had a matching cap and booties tied to the top instead of a bow. Of all the things I got that one was just the most thoughtful. I hope this helps.

Is she registered anywhere? Ask your mom, maybe, or your aunt herself. She may have registered for uni-sex things that she wants, like toys or carriers or clothes in a neutral color (like green or yellow), or even diapers (which new parents can never get enough of!).

My go-to shower gift is to get Aveeno baby lotion, Aveeno baby hair/body wash, and Aveeno calming lavender bath soap, packaged with hooded bath towels and maybe a rubber duckie for decoration. It's practical, useful, and even if they get ten of the exact same thing it doesn't matter, because it will all get used - no matter how old the baby is (unlike clothes or diapers or other things that are only good for a finite period of time).

Gift certificates are always a good idea. Also, some gifts that are not gender specific, such as shampoos, lotions, diapers, tub, baby toys, or Boppy.
The new mom will also probably be pretty tired and have lots to do the first few weeks, so some pampering would be well appreciated. Perhaps, gift cards to restaurants, or homemade meals that can be frozen.

A gift certificate for a photography session for the baby. I am a newborn photographer and gift certificates are always a favorite. Most of my clients receive gift certificates that cover the session and prints/portrait jewelry/ and a diaper bag with a portrait from their session on it. Always a hit. My gift certificates come in a picture frame (for a nice presentation) which can be used for one of their prints later. I travel everywhere. Check it out.

A DIAPER CAKE (seriously)

Sure to stand out, and be talked about for a long time!!! Fill it with neccesities that mom and dad usually forget all about....until that one night at 2am baby is gassy or has a tooth coming in!!!

Make it the theme of the shower....or go with a green and yellow and orange one!!! Simple and elegant.....or extravagant!!!

I make 'em!!! Check out my sight....I have quite a few neutral cakes featured in my galleries!!! (check out the cat one and the 5-Tier green one with the bear on top. BOTH of those were for gender undetermined showers!!)

Just an idea......sometimes it's nice to give an unexpected gift, you know??

Good luck to you in your quest for the PERFECT gift!!

My site also links to other Work at Home Mothers who also sell fabulous gifts to Celebrate Baby....if the diaper cakes aren't your style check those out, too....you never know!

onesies in colors other than pink, receiving blanket, disposable diapers, infant toys, care products such as baby wipes, baby shampoo and lotion/oil, waterproof crib sheet, diaper pail, a bundle of cloth diapers, booties or socks

While they are newborn, up until they begin to roll over, boy/girl stuff does not matter as much if they are practical. They pretty much do well in onesies and they have to be changed often if diapers leak.

I would go with white baby booties and a blanket/burp set in all white (or close to it). The color is obviously bleachable (gotta love those bleach pens for stains!) and these are things they will definitely use! I actually have a small business where I sew (and sew, and sew) lots of baby and child gift items, and your question is a common one! -mc
