Hi Tonia,
Have tried most of the things listed in the above answers, with varying success. Found this helped:

Take whatever thought pattern you find is recurring most often : ie, I'm too dumb, too tired, too ugly etc, to get anywhere in life.

Ask the following:

Is it true?

Can I absolutely know that its true?

How do I react when I believe the thought?

What would I be without that thought?

Truly, the only person who can control your perspective is you. And your perspective affects everything else in your life. Slow down your thinking until you can take a step back from it before you start reacting to it. This will take time and practice, but I know when I do it, it helps. And I still get caught not doing it, even after a couple of years now!

Best of luck!

I am disabled from back surgery I had over 4 years ago and
I have been depressed over being out of work and not making money and going bankrupt with my bills and having bad credit and feeling bad most of the time...
I have gone to therapy and different doctors and am on
different kinds of medication right now...
I have been depressed about being out of work mostly with
no money making skills and unable to be hired for any kind
of job due to the fact that I have a hard time walking and standing...
I stay in my house a lot and play on the computer and watch movies and TV...Sometimes I don't go out for days...

I have found 2 things that help me...
One is to make a list of projects or errands you want to do or places you want to go on certain days of your week...
Just a simple list of I need to go here and I need to go there...
The other thing I found that helps is to actually talk to someone, be it a friend, a counselor, a minister, a psychiatrist, or doctor...
Just talk to someone who will listen to you and offer advice...
That helps me a lot just to talk out my problems with someone else in person...

See a good counselor. It helped me a lot to see a psychologist along with taking my medication. She listened and also had good suggestions for dealing with bad days. Exercise will help lift your mood too. If you have seasonal affective disorder, a tanning bed will help too by exposing you to UV light. One of the things that helped me was taking back up something I hadn't done in years. I started horseback riding again, and I hadn't done it since I was a teenager.

Depression is a demon, but you are being proactive by taking medication. Since your haven't said your age, I will just give some suggestions: take up a hobby, do some volunteer work, go to church. Find things that you enjoy.
Good Luck.

Believe it or not eating a healthy diet and exercise will help. Another thing I learned was journaling is a good tool to help with depression. They also say tanning is helpful for those of us who suffer from seasonal depression (due to lack of sunshine). I don't promote tanning but if it helps...
And if you are feeling really low you may want to consider seeing a counselor or someone to talk to.
Best wishes to you and your battle. I know what you are going through.

Staying busy helps alot, like exersise, spending time
with friends.
Sometimes even writing down the things that make you
depressed and trying to make thews changes can help to.
You could also volunteer at an animal shelter or something,
I know animals always makes my day !!!!!!!

Site below has things to help like advice from psychiatrist about what your doctor may not tell you about depression. Also it has foods that the U.S. Dept of Agriculture has found to contain antidepressant chemicals. Foods like grapes and apples. Lots of tips.
