There are very good saints whose presence and guidance helps us a lot in our evolution.

If you are guided by an Indian friend, you can know more about them and the real saints who can guide us on the path. If you have no such guidance it is advised to take to some standard organizations like Ramakrishna mission, Chinmaya mission, Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Art of Living foundation, Prasanna trust, etc.

However if you are an advanced seeker, then obviously you will know more about the qualities of the sadhus already.

Any thing that is revered has a duplicate and that is what many people warn you about. Also there is some misunderstanding between sadhus and beggars as they sometimes look similar.

So get guided to get the best knowledge from the best sadhus of India. Many foreigners have got such guidance from Sri Aurobindo, Swami Vivekananda, Swami Chinmayananda, Sri Ramana Maharshi and many such sages in the past and even in the present.

India is very different than where you come from. We have a very rich culture and many powers worshiped as divine Gods. And so We have many breeds of SAdhus. Sadhus are people , humans who have denounced the noraml virtual living in search of the eternal truth and peace what we call as NIRVANA or MOKSHA.
Ther are many kinds of Sadhus. We have nagas, aghories and the like. The KUmbha melas are the best places to meet these various kinds of sadhus. They worship different gods and meditate in different ways but their ultimate goal is the same. There are Sadhus who worship the negative strengths and some who worship the positive. There are tantrics who use the Tantra! Its difficult for you to understand india in three visits. Most of us Hindus find it hard to comprehend our own way of life in just one life time so much so that we dont even try to do so!

Sadhu is a person who did intense SADHANA (practise) to achieve his goal that is MOKSHA(salvation). To identify a real Sadhu is a Herculean task. Most of the Sadhus we come across are the one who took this path for their lively hood. If you are in look out for a REAL SADHU you have to do your own SADHANA(search) to identify/locate.

They are people who have relinquished family life, and spend time in meditation away from the madding crowds.
