How do you correctly do push ups while on your knees? I know that people use their knees to help them if they can't do a "real" push up. How is that so? I know these push ups are known as "girl" push ups. Why? If you do these push ups, will it help you do "real" push ups later?

Former Soldier in the U.S.Army

For a few months I had to lead what is called remedial P.T. or physical training. It was designed for the people who could not pass a standard Army P.T. test.
The resting push-up or "girl push-up is simple and effective. Instead of pushing up and balancing 100% of your body weight your only maintaining about 40-50.
Lye on your stomach flat on the floor. Place your hands palms down on the ground at about chest level (your fingers should be at the top of the peck muscles and heal of the hand at the base of the peck.
Then in on simple motion stretch your arms out until the elbows lock. Your knees should never leave the ground and still be planted firmly as if someone lifted you at the chest and picked you up.
Release yourself slowly back down. For maximum muscle build it's best to count to five on your way up and down. This will build strength in your pectoralis major, minor, triceps, and shoulders. Do about 10 repetitions of 10 once every 3 days to allow the muscles to heal.
After about a month you can move up to full push-up's remember that in the full possition your legs come up with the rest of your body at a perfect 45 degree angle. From here you can change it up from the standard arm distance to wide arm even to diamonds or "closed hand push-ups".
You should be alright from there.
