I'm currently getting healthcare through my employer since I'm no longer eligible for medicaid for my daughter or county health for either of us. well, it's killing me- our health ins sucks. i am to pay $300 a month for just me and my daughter (husband not included) plus $30 copays per visit and $10 prescription co-pays.

my question: is it worth it to drop the coverage and just get some sort of catastrophic coverage for my 16month old daughter? or does anybody know of any individual plans that offer real service without ridiculously high deductlibles?

i just want to note that i live in texas, so please take into consideration that the cost of living may be different than for many of you. $300 a month is a good chunk for me. thanks in advance for all who have an answer.

I'm in Houston. Our plan costs us $400 a month (through the employer!) and our prescription deductible is $30. So ours is more expensive than yours.

No, it's not worth it. You need coverage, too. Uninsured medical costs are the #1 reason for bankruptcy today in the US.

Does "real service" mean "more coverage"? I think you're in pretty good shape right now - you just don't like the price.

You might want to look into Medi-Share, http://www.medi-share.org/ to see how it compares.

Little kids get sick and need shots so I would not drop her coverage. Can you get a better job? One that offers better benefits? Health care sucks all over. I was quoted a price of just under $500 a month for just myself, and the plan only cover 80%, I am still out of pocket for 20%.

This country needs national health care. It's ridiculous that the average working person can't afford basic medical care. Just about every other industrialized nation is light years ahead of us on that.

Good luck!

Jeezuz H! There HAS to be cheaper coverage than that. I wish I knew who to tell ya to go to. Medical Escrow is the wave of the future for supplementing catastrophic care. At least you are not pissing away all the money you pay in. You can say how it gets spent, and if you decide on other coverage you can get your $ back out of it. The monthly payments are drastically lower.

i think that's real good coverage at a great price. i have private insurance and i pay 400 a month and they do not pay for anything until i have met the deductible and that is 1500 dollars.

Look into the CHIPS program for your daughter. You may qualify for that. You can always check the web for insurance quaotes but its still going to be pretty high.
