If i put moderate pressure on my 1 year old cat's lower spine he gets upset (meowing and scratching). He's fully mobile, climbs 40 foot trees, and is very active and never shows any signs he's in pain. Is that just his instincts?

He may have a pulled muscle or strained tendon but, either way, it doesn't sound normal. Can you get him to a vet? That's about the only way to be sure.

From what your saying, I'm guessing that he's not injured.

Some cats just have little weird things about them, like my cat doesn't like it when I hold onto her paws. Maybe your cat just doesn't like being pinned down.

I don't think he's hurt if he climbs 40 foot trees, because trust me, they need all the back muscle they have to get up there. It could also be possible that it is just a bruise.

If he stop climbing around everywhere, take a visit to the vet, but for now, just stand back and observe. There is nothing worse that a wasted trip to the vet.

you may want to get him checked out just in case, I've never had a cat react like that when I pushed down on their back.

It may hurt or it may just be a sensitive spot.
Stop doing it.
