I have a keyboarding/business system and technology class in school, and I already type fast enough, about 70wpm, BUT I only type with 3 or 4 fingers....we're learning how to type "properly", and about everyone else in the class can barley type and is at 5-20 wmp (which I find kind of funny , imagine those people typing up a 5 page report, Hell!), anyways, the teacher makes us use this keyboarding program to learn and practice how to type "quickly and efficiantly" ( fingers on home row, wrist up, blah blah blah), and I learned that I can just speed through it when she's not looking typing how I normally type, I was just wondering, to the older people out of highschool, do you guys actually type like that? I find it a lot harder for me to type "properly" how many people actually do it after learning how?

I chuckled when I saw this question because I always wondered the same thing when I was in high school. THEN I got a job where I was using the computer a lot and found that it was embarrassing to "hunt and peck" the keys, so I took a Keyboarding class at a community college and learned to type "properly". It's made a HUGE difference in how quickly I type and I can type when I am not looking at the keyboard, too! If only I would have learned it right the 1st time and not have to waste my time (and money) at a college. When you first are learning, it will be hard to do because you have to train your hands and brain to do it, but trust me, the more you force yourself to do it, you'll be able to do it better and better each time.

I type properly now except for the wrist thing, but I have this wrist pad that keeps my hands up anyways.

I used to be able to type at about 60 wpm using only my pointer fingers in middle school...but I quit doing that when I took a typing class. In high school, I decided I needed to stop looking at the keyboard, so I just practiced at typing until I stopped doing that. Anyways, I'm up to about 100 wpm, typing "properly." It helps using more fingers, because you can type for longer periods of time since the stress of typing is spread out through all the fingers. Plus your wrists don't get as tired because they move as little as possible. Maybe it doesn't matter now, since you're still in school, but if you're typing up something that's more than maybe 10 pages, it does make a difference.

It's pretty crazy how people can't type. I don't know how they function in the business world without knowing how to type...my boss still uses the hunt and peck method, but...he's the boss.

:D yeah, there are those people out there who slack off, like me; I use 3 fingers and jab at the keys. The problem is, though, that I can't type perfectly without looking at the keyboard.

I think typing 'properly' is a pretty good idea- but you don't have to follow all the rules. Twist the method until you feel that typing is comfortable and fast...and when you get most of the words you want on the screen. :)

I had to go through the same thing and I did type faster with my fingers going all over the place besides the home row but my teacher was persistant on getting me used to the home row and now I actually type faster using the proper techniques and what not. Keep practicing or just do it your way and don't get caught. Like in some movie I watched you aren't cheating unless you get caught.

I took a typing class sophomore year of high school and have been typing that way ever since. I don't even think about typing anymore. I'm somewhere around 70-80wpm (I get comments in the office when I'm typing away). But yes, I did learn it properly in HS and still use it that way.

In the "olden days", late 50's, I was taught to type properly but i was slow. I only use about 7 fingers now and i type faster than i did in high school. And of course, thank g-d for spell check!!!!

i took a class in high school and went on to get a degree in computers. i type probably 100 wpm, but the best thing is that i have never looked down at my hands for the past like 7 years. it's just natural to me like riding a bike i never even think about it, then i can concentrate on what i'm doing and plus everyone likes to gather around and be amazed.
well if you're in a class and they're trying to teach you a cool and useful skill, i would say do your best and try to get something out of it instead of just wasting time resenting the fact that you're there. like they say, you can drive a car with your feet, but that doesnt mean you should.

I do type properly, and I never look at the keyboard! It is way faster for me, but there are different strokes for different folks!
