Of course God is real! In fact, that quote "doing unto others as you would have them do to you", is directly from the bible found in Matthew 7:12 "So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
The Bible itself is a number of books from many authors, written for everyone and they were superintended by God.
There are many websites that could help you find if god really exists and evidence to back this up.

This is just my opinion obviously, but that's why I believe in God, but not in religion. Religion was started by man in the old civilizations where there were no laws; putting fear of God and an afterlife in people were the best ways to create order. The theory was that "you behave in this life, God will take care of you in the next life." It was a brillliant way to bring upon harmony at a time void of laws. But that doesn't mean God doesn't exist. He does and is too grand in scope to be defined by anyone or any religion. Think about it; would God, being all-knowing and all-powerful come up with so many different religions and conflicting doctrines to manifest himeself? Would He now know that that would confuse people and possibly make non-believers even more skeptical? And what about all the wars and other problems religion has caused? God would not want that. So I believe that there is a God, one God. And He is a good and loving God who would never condone some of the violent preachings in some religions. He would certainly not want people to kill those who are of a different religion if indeed we all believe in the same God. So I believe there is one God for us all and that it's religion that's confused things so much. As far as knowing how God is real, some people just do and others don't. And it's not a matter of religion. As I just pointed out, I have very strong faith in God and I know He's real, but I don't abide by any religion. God is inside each and every one of us. We are an extension of him. If you want proof that God is real, don't read the Bible, go to the beach and look at that vast stretch of the ocean, watch the birds, look at every possible grain of sand. Or go watch a baby being born. These are the things that will make you feel God and know that there is an entity, a God, that makes these miracles possible. Someone started life, the galaxies, down to very first grain of sand....who, if not God, did that? Call God what you will, that's just a word. Call Him Mother Nature or a Higher Power, anything...as long as it reflects that there's someone who created this life for us all.Surely, he wasn't bored! He did it with an intension and we will have to wait a long time to find out what the meaning of it all is.So now you're going to call me crazy, but hear me out: I know God exists b/c I can feel him in my life even when I don't seek him. I can tell when he's unappy with me, etc. (Or is that Santa Claus!!) No, but seriously, when you open yourself up spiritually, you will feel God and be able to see that He has your best interest at heart and that when something bad happens and you get mad at God, someday, you relaize that that "bad" thing was the best thing for yu at the time. of course life isn't fair and I too am puzzled when innocent, good people die in natural disasters. But like I said, there's only so much we can know about God. Someday, we'll get to grill Him and ask Him all our questions!!! For now, I personally believe strongly in a good and loving God, almost like a loving father, The other stuff you mention about culture and having throusands or interpretations of God, I take those with a grain of salt at best.
Hope this helps. Or at least, hope iit didn't confuse you even more!! LOL
Good luck in your search It's an interesting one

Let's say Christians are wrong about God. Their book is not the only word of God, and we give everybody a fair shot.
Either as you say, God does not exist, or God makes him/herself absent from the general populaces lives for reasons we don't know, and the sacred texts are legends some of which could be true.
It does seem silly that God doesn't make him/herself more apparant without having to have a book to demonstrate him/herself.
That why I see Nature as God. I feel like God is like "Hello, I'm right here!" I've personally gained more wisdom from watching Nature than from reading any book. I think a connection with Nature is universal, and religions distract us from that, which is why many don't care about the environment anymore.

It is easy to see unity in a stone than in a tree. Branches, twigs, leaves, flowers, fruits...are greatly different from each other and from themselves. This difficulty increases on higher living levels.
The limited mind of man cannot conceive the Divine Unity of the One True God.
However, patient study of the Holy Books is very helpful for the true seekers.

Whatever it's called, it's the only thing that is real. The way a person "knows" this is to go within & seek for however long it takes. Practice being still & it does take practice. Only teachings you can prove to your self should be looked at, the rest are worthless to the true seeker.

Go to this web site and ask your questions and have them answered from the Bible.
www.amazingfacts.org
There is a Bible Questions section and you can listen to all your questions answered according to what the Bible says.
If you ask people for these answers you will get all kinds of opinions. But getting them answered from the Bible is the "only" way to get the true answer according to Gods word.....
Have Fun & God Bless !
