My mom's cat does the exact same thing. He waits by the door when someone's coming in or going out, so he can run out as soon as they open the door. But as soon as he gets through the door, he drops and starts rolling around on the concrete. I think he just likes the way it feels and/or smells. It's odd.

My cat is an indoor cat only and she rolls over right in front of me when i walk in the door. I think it's their way of saying I'm happy... I think it's kind of cute :)

1. rubbing and rolling around the ground feels good to the cat
2. by rubbing against things, the cat transfers some of its scent on it and thereby "claiming possession of the thing (the "thing" can be you!). So, rubbing himself on the ground and rolling in the dirt is a cat's way of saying, "THIS LAND IS MY LAND!"
3. the dust from the ground is a natural flea retardant and the cat 'knows' this by instinct

My Mom's cat does the same exact thing. I think maybe they like the smell of outside or something. I've never understood why dogs or cats do it.

I think it's because they may want to leave their scent behind, near their territory. Or maybe it feels good, like a massage or back rub. Who knows for sure? But good question!!

it could be trying to get the smell on him or her to see if there have been any intruders in your yard...as in other cats
