I just checked out depersonalisation on Wikipedia (through a google search). Maybe you could point friends and family to this to help them understand. I happen to suffer from Panic Attacks, and find depersonalisation is a problem with them and more generally. Sometimes you have to accept others just won't understand. A lot of the belief you have about them seeing it as you "just making it up" may be your own sensitivity to being taken seriously. I know for myself, I have to constantly remind myself to give them the opportunity to understand where I 'm at. If they don't pick it up, its their problem, not mine. Keep looking for people who will support and understand you, and leave the others to come to it in their own time. Remind yourself it's not your fault, but it is a condition you need to learn how to manage, just like diabetes or any other chronic condition. Seek professional help if you're having a tough time. Last but not least, you are not a weak or somehow lesser person just because you have this condition.

If it will help, I'm happy to talk more with you about it, just post up another question!

It is like all other mental illnesses--the general public has no idea how disabeling mental problems can be. the thing i hear the most is to just get over it or to just get drunk and that will make everything better. I suffer from depression so i know what misconceptions society has about most mental illnesses. we look completely normal and for the most part we can act normal also. the sickness is invisible so everyone assumes that it is either made up or just not very serious. my suggestion to you is to stay away from the uneducated peolpe that think you should get over it. or you could find info about depersonalization and educate people so they know how to react to you and help you. i wish you the best of luck and i hope you can get as much control over you illness as possible.

Peace&hope

A lot of times it's because people either can't grasp the entire concept of it, or they just plain don't want to. That way, when it comes time to have to deal with it seriously, they can tell you to just get over it and they won't feel bad about it, because they think they've done their duty to help you. It's called stupidity and ignorance, and unfortunatly for most people with mental illness in the world, including myself, it is running rampant these days. People have decided that if you don't fit in with the "norm" then you should just be pushed aside and that's how you are to be dealt with. I would like to know who decided these people are in charge, and who decided what exactly the "norm" is?
