Large waves of immigrants always face nativism.

Illegal immigration is of concern only to those states whose borders run alongside Mexico's border. Except in a hypothetical manner you never hear it being discussed in New England and it has gotten far more attention than it merits. This is because President Bush used to be governor of Texas, so naturally it follows that Texans would consider it an issue and because Texas shares a huge border with Mexico. Likewise with the other border states. When was the last time you heard anything bad about the waves of illegal immigrants descending upon us from Canada? Probably never. Canadians are largely white. It is also a racial issue.
Historically, immigration issues have hit the news when certain classes of the population are down on their luck or when the country is going through a recession or depression. Such was the case in the 1930's and in every monetary downturn ever since. It is far simpler to blame a less advantaged group than ones self and look for scapegoats than it is to try and fix things. The attitude says everything bad there is about America and nothing good. But it is not quite the issue it is made out to be. Without emigrants, America would be nothing but open wilderness.

Because while we the citizens wish they were gone, the government has a very different idea..I don't know what it is, but it doesn not have anything to do with helping tax paying Americans... Oh and I think you should rephrase your questions. I have a problem with illegal immigrants in general, not just Mexicans... Although you will notice that when other nationalities come here illegally, they don't ask for rights like these people from south of the border do... That's something I noticed. These illegal mexicans really think America belongs to them. I mean seriously, if they can't even build up their own country, what makes them think that a country 10x more powerful than their own, will stand to let them claim it.. It's stupid...They're just ignorant...I can't wait for the day some terrorist comes up through the border. Sadly, I know something devastating will happen before President A$$hole really does something about this..

How does one keep answering this over and over again and none of you allegedly evolved and compassionate people listen. This country WELCOMES immigration. Say it again WE WELCOME IMMIGRATION! However, there are rules, laws and guidelines that must be followed or there will be bedlam! The only immigrants targeted in the current scrutiny are those that have come here ILLEGALLY. They've sneaked in; have hidden themselves and are infringing on the rights and resources of all who are here legally. If they were dealing drugs, you would want them prosecuted. Well, they are breaking a different law. Would you have that overlooked? I don't know who you're talking about when you say nationalities have invaded America, but most who came here last century had to go through Ellis Island then lived in the immigrant tenements on the lower east side of Manhattan. The problem with all of the Mexican illegals is recent and is escalating. THAT is why it is being recognized as 'such a problem' now. Got it? I didn't think so, but I had to try.

They are not necessarily a problem at all. I think that the problem today isn't that we have illegal aliens here. I think that because of the fact that we now have terrorist entering through our borders that has brought the issue to the forefront. People have a heightened awareness of illegal crossings and tend to translate all of them to Illegal Aliens. We have had Illegal Mexicans in our country for many generations and it has never been much of a problem. The fact is that only a few years ago, prior to 9-11 the majority of the U.S. Supported illegal immigration as a way to keep costs down in the U.S. Since that time a lot of blame has been passed around and unfortunately the bulk of it has landed on Illegal Mexican Immigrants. I don't know your age however I was around during the Carter and Regan presidential administrations when the majority of the people in the U.S. supported amnesty and a legal worker program. Times have changed thanks to radical terrorism and unfortunately people who cross our borders from Canada & Mexico have and will continue to suffer from the problems it has caused. I have noticed a lot more questions and answers on Yahoo with really racial overtones. It's really wrong and I hate to see that happen. Bigots are actuallly stupid people so they don't learn easily.

It's not the matter of having immirgents in America that's an issue, the key word is illegal. The deal is that people come over to the US illegaly and don't pay taxes but still take all the benefits of citizenship like taking a job away from Americans, being in the publi school system, or worse they don't have a job and consume without adding to our economy. The issue isn't the fact that there's a diverse population in America, it's that some came here illegaly and don't deserve to be here.

Other nationalities weren't a problem until they were coming here illegally. If other nationalities come here illegally, then they cannot be protected under our law. Also, they are a problem because most of them cannot work legally, of course, so tax payers are paying for the welfare of illegal immigrants. They probably should have be more strict in the past, but they are trying to do something now, right? They answer to "then why has America allowed all these different nationalities?" is that's what makes America so great, the opportunity of freedom and democracy.

The third response, from Naomi, was rather ignorant. Sure every politician courts their constituency, so what's your point?

The fact is people like her are ignorant - plain and simple. They have failed to educate themselves on the issue before commenting. Illegal immigrants, who not only disrespect our laws and our language, are bankrupting America.

They are using government services, hospitals (the nation's second largest maternity ward delivers roughly 70% illegals some of them several times to the same mother) and schools. The liberals desperately need these illegals to stay here in order to create a larger constituency in order to win elections. This explains why they are supporting illegal immigration.

You're absolutely right about one thing. This can be nipped in the bud.

All we have to do is pass a law that says "you catch 'em, you keep 'em for seven years." If you're buying anything at all from Wal-mart (or just about anywhere else for that matter) you'll find many times it's Made In China.

China has the world's largest prison labor force. They have the world's second largest economy. Second to the United States, yet their per capita income is far below even Mexico's. What does this mean?

It means you're already supporting slave labor if you have anything that is Made In China. It means you're paying the same price for those goods as if an American, earning American wages, produced the goods. It means the Communist Chinese government, which is continually building up it's military arsenal, is getting richer while the poor guy that's imprisoned is forced to work for free. It means the corporations that do business their are earning higher profits because of the discrepency. It means that you're allowing yourself to be taken advantage of because you have failed to educate yourself on this issue.

Once legislation in the United States is passed that says "you catch 'em you keep 'em for seven years" most illegals will make a mad dash for the border. If they cover theirselves in Crisco it'll make for a helluva slippery time catching any of them. Those that remain behind could be considered to be in support of slave labor for seven years.

Once that seven year period passes they would be allowed to apply for citizenship. If they fail the test - they do another seven years. This solution is the most cost effective - not to mention the most effective solution period - way to attack this problem and solve it once and for all.

So you say you may not have the spine to support slave labor on American soil. Then we could take a 800 foot strip along the southern border and put up guard towers every 400 feet. Then lease out the guard towers to hunters. That ought to do the trick.

If you like what you've read: copy and send to your fellow Americans. Amnesty is just a way for liberals to win more elections because they're finding they have to stoop to such low levels in order to find more constituents.

First off, there really hasn't been any threat of illegal immigration of the magnitude of the Mexican issue. Simply because...no other countries besides Canada border us. Most European immigrant would have to cross a large body of water to get to us.

And to answer the second part - WE DID try to stop it. Early in our nation's history the federalists passed the Alien and Sedition act. They were both trying to stop immigrants from gaining power, or becoming citizens.

The problem isn't Immigrants. The problem is the government of Mexico has an organized policy of sending it's people to our country to take everything they can from us. A few million wouldn't be a problem. But 20 million is too much for our country to handle.

What!!!
Most other immigrants from other nations who immigrate to this country are high educated engineeers, scientists, and doctors who make this country's economy (except for legal refugees).

Yes, we did slack off for a long time, and that did cause a lot of issues (which I won't say it here. Intelligent ppl would understand what I'm saying).

Immigrating Illegally is illegal. It's a felony.
