I stand at five foot so how long of a Bo Staff do I need? I won't be doing any sparring just practice and stuff with it. Do I need a five foot or a five foot and a half?

My experience is that you want, when possible, a stick a little taller than you are. Right now the 5.5 sounds best.

I'm 5.75+ and use a 6 foot stick. This allows me good and sharp movement as well as excellent fulcrum effect for strikes. Throw in some sweeps, tuck, no hand passing, etc and I find that a stick that's a little taller than I am makes for a great workout and an impressive routine.

For sparring, take a 6' length of 2" diameter or so PVC, the thicker rather than thinner, and cover it with pipe wrapping and duct tape. this will give ou a good sparring stick and decrease the chance for injury. Wear all appropriate sparring gear as well.

There are two schools of thought on this. Some believe that the Bo should always be 6' long, while other say it is about 2" longer than you are tall. Both are correct, for the style they do. There were hundreds of different styles of Kobudo in Japan during the Samurai era. All of them did not have the same standards for the techniques they practiced, or the length of the Bo. The Jo is generally 48" to 50" long. That too may vary slightly. Commercialism has basically gotten people into thinking that a Jo is always X length and a Bo is 6' long. If you consider that it is not practical for a martial arts supply to stock many different lengths of Bo, it begins to make sense. In your case, you should really ask your instructor what length Bo you should use. Many places sell a 5'6" long Bo. Your instructor may want you to use that length? NOTE: it is not correct to call a "Bo" a "Bo staff", or a "Jo" a "Jo staff". A bo is a stick or staff, so saying bo staff is redundant. Best of Luck! ...

In Chinese disiplines, the Lik Dim Boon Quan also know as the Six and 1/2 Point Staff or Long pole is 6 feet long. The origins are cloudy, but the reason for use was China had banned all layperson from having weapond except for staff. Length of the staff is utilized to keep the attacker at a distance. The techniques are also simular to those used with the spear.

Bushido's answer is what I was going to say. I like a bo staff just under my own height so nose or eye level. Jo staff is really short and should be under your chin. Some folks like a bo staff to be taller then them, but that limits your movement and some styles require that it be shorter then you are tall.

a five footer or just shorter is plenty good for you, usually at eyebrow level is good enough.

if it's too tall it's difficult to use, but if it's about the same height or just shorter than you are then it's good enough for training purposes
