You don't want to put them together in the same cage until you know that they will get along. This has less to do with the different breeds than with the different personalities.

Start by putting their cages near each other. If that works put them right next to each other. After several months if they are getting along and can be out of their cages with each other without fighting and in their cages next to each other without fighting you might try to put them together in a larger cage together.

Understand that birds bond to EITHER another bird or to a human, so you may be giving up a little feathered friend. (or two). If they bond to each other they may start being aggressive toward you or other people.

If you do put them together you need a cage that is more than twice as large as your 'normal' bird cage. You can't just combine them into one regular cage. Birds are not only very territorial but even when they get along they need plenty of their own space.

Hope that helps!

Well I'd be a little unsure. It depends on how long they've known about the other bird. If they grew up together then they'd probably already have a bond. But if not it would be safer to see how they react with each other first, maybe by what they do with cages being close together.

It all depends how tame they both are. And their sex. If both males and not tame, yeah they'll peck at each other. If one female and the other male, well they may try something. Check them out and see if there is any reaction. But, watch them closely.
The best thing is to keep them in separate cages and have them together with you at play-time to see how they interact with each other. To find out the sex of the birds, you have to use your finger and feel two little bones right where their vent is where they poop from and if the two little bones are together it's a male and if the bones are apart it's female. Although in a very young female the bones can be together and as she ages they will part abit. Good Luck.

It depends entirely on the gender for parakeets. Females tend to be more aggresive. Even if both are friendly birds, I don't think you should put two different birds in a cage, but I have a cockatiel that gets along really well with my friend's parakeet. If your birds are friendly, then go for it!

Sometimes it works out that a parakeet and another bird can co-habituate in a cage but often times this results in a trip to the vet because the budgie bites a toe off.

Be safe and don't do it.

I've heard that as long as you have a big enough cage for them to each have their own space - they should be fine.

You just test them out first to make sure they will get along. After all not everyone likes everyone else - chances are it happens in the bird world too.
