I don't believe that it is laziness that causes people to avoid reading the Bible. People don't read the Bible because they are afraid of learning the truth. The truth is a powerful force to be reckoned with and most people will avoid it because they know deep down in their souls that it will require action on their part.
It's just like a child who if they never learn right from wrong will continue to act in a selfish and self-serving manner until they are mature enough to accept the truth and change.
There are many adults who are not mature enough to accept their own responsibilties let alone seek out the truth. The Bible asks us to look within ourselves and see the truth. The truth that first of all we are flawed and secondly, even though we are flawed there is a God who loved us and paid the ultimate sacrifice for us to redeem us.
Most of us can't imagine anyone caring enough about us to die for us so we refuse to see the truth. It is there and one day it will come out in such a way that every one will see it.

look maybe you read the bible with the eyes of a believer and you cry your eyes out when you do so...but for me as a non believer is all nonsense. I can read the bible, in fact i did, as a cultural work since obviously it has influenced many of the great writer in our culture but dont think that by reading it i am gonna start believing everything in there.
Bad thing about the bible is that people like you have tried to give it a divine importance that i dont really find.
It may be an acceptable literary work full stop (well i think it is boring) let´s say that it is a great literary source to understand other more important literary works

People usually quote specific verses because they are verses that are always quoted to explain things. Reading "the whole thing" isn't a matter of laziness, it's more of an exercise in futility. The way the Bible is written makes it very difficult to interprete and very challenging to follow.

You know, I think it was trying to read the entire Bible that got me thinking that Christianity is based on a lot of very odd and unusual ideas that don't necessarily make any sense. Doesn't mean I don't believe in God. Just found the Bible really weird.

You could read the whole Bible and still not know what it is about. It takes an understanding through education, to know the why, when, where and to whom the Bible was written. Just because one can quote Bible passages, does not make them an expert on the Bible.

Boastful people who read the Bible for criticism will not see anything better even if they read the whole Book. It is really pitiful when rational beings allow prejudices to interfere between them and the Divine Educator.

Why do religious folk just keep quoting the same old verses time and time again. Its always the condemning verses as well, which they seem to know off by heart. On here i have never seen a christian quote a verse about love and compassion.

I have read the whole thing, for many years I studied it. If you really read it you would see all the evil things it in too. Now I found a more peaceful path. I am happy being a Pagan, more then I ever was as a Christian. If you wish to be a Christian that's okay, but don't expect everyone else to be too.

Good question. Knowing the Bible is one thing. Knowing the Author is another.

actually most of them haven't read any of the bible. they go on websites that are against the word of God and paste the stuff to this site to make it seem as though they have read it just to offend those that do believe in the word of God.
