my bourke died. i didn't have him very long. it was sad. i just got a new budgie from the pet store today.

but i was just wondering if there was a difference between the two so i know what to expect...i know budgies are slightly smaller birds so just wondering if their life spans are shorter then?

and behaviors and anything else you would know etc.

I truly think it depends on the bird. We've had budgies for years, my oldest is 10 years old, and they are wild and crazy little creatures! Some of them are very tame; others are more aloof. They are all noisy, active and social.
I got a Bourke from a friend who could no longer care for her. She was highly socialized, as he worked with her day after day, but it took much longer for her to be friendly and tame than it did the budgies. She was very, very quiet. Once she got used to us, she was relentless in spending time with us and grooming our cuticles. She'd drive me crazy with that, to the point that I had to close her in her cage at times. All our birds have free flight in our house, although they also choose to spend time in their cages and usually stay in the bird room.
So from my limited experience, they are different in temperament, although each bird has its own personality.
Have fun with your new budgie!! :)

I have had my bourke's for several years now. They are 'classic' aviary birds in the sense that they are not as confiding as budgies - and larger parrots for that matter. Like other Aussie grass keet species, they are highly prone to fatty liver disease. Now that you know this it is important NOT to feed high calorie foods -never those sugary treats at the petstore. They like seeds (of course) so buy that; some good quality pellets (feed some but not too much, an avian vet told me this after one of my own bourke's was diagnosed with fatty liver disease - pellets are high in calories); fresh veggies including romaine lettuce. The idea is to keep the bird's diet low in calories. They are much more gentle and much quieter than budgies. They are also not as active and gregarious. Have fun with your new pet.

We had a budgie first and have a bourke now. The budgies are more active, like to play with toys, etc. They sometimes can learn to talk, unlike the Bourkes. The bourke is quieter and sings less often (although I love how pretty his song is).
