When you buy the Windows Vista OS, what is the difference between getting the package product and getting only the upgrade.

I don't understand why getting the package is more expensive than getting the upgrade...

The Upgrade Package of Vista is able to install on Native Windows XP PCs only. The Full Install Package is able to install on all PCs, including Win 98, Win 93, Linux, Mac OSX, and many more. Full Install also includes all Windows Binary files, File Types, and Drivers, while the upgrade just includes the apps, some file types, and the Vista Framework (WPF, WPL, and .Net Framework 3.0), which leads to faster installation time, and has the option to "Upgrade", and keep all Windows XP files and apps.

Thank You,

You would use the upgrade to upgrade your present windows os to vista. How ever you should read the package and make sure you can upgrade your present os. The package you would need to install a full blown program in your computer as if you do not have a program now or want to reformat or you cannot upgrade your present os.

The third answer is the only one fully correct so far. They are the same thing, THE EXACT SAME THING, except that the upgrade version requires proof that you owned XP, you can do this buy simply inserting the XP disc while installing Vista, it does not have to be installed on the computer.

The package is all the files, the upgrade is only the additional files needed since you already have windows.

The first answerer is incorrect.

If you own WIndows XP, it is afunctioning operating system that does all you need it to do. SO they incentivise you moving to a new OS. Hence, the discount.

The upgrade cd has all the same files. However it may prompt you for the windows xp cd or cd-key to show you are eligible for the upgrade.
