I hate the way vets do it. I've had very uncomfortable pups and bad cuts. I do them myself. The correct cut is 1 1/2 vertabre but I prefer 2 vertabre which is a nice cut. Not TOO short where there is no tail and not long at all. 2 is a great length. Some of us DO show our dogs and there are breed standards that need to be met. There are far worse things that people do on a daily basis than docking a tail.

First, I had no idea that Rottweilers with docked tails looked "meaner" than those with tails.
Second, your vet should know the correct length. One style is shorter than the other though.
Don't do it yourself. It can cause problems-infections etc.

Whoever the person is docking the tail should have the knowledge and experience to know that. I am sure you can get books specific to the breed that will say and speaking to breeders and vets can get you the information as well.

The vet will know. Never do this yourself, the tail is part of the spine and not to be messed with.

You shouldn't dock their tails unless you plan on showing it. Dogs need their tails for balance when they run and jump and swim. Don't dock it just to dock it.

i would reccomend not doing it. my rott had a full length tail and was perfect in every way! i think cutting the tail and ears are similar to a human getting plastic surgery, except the dog doesn't get to decide, you just start cutting up on him to make him look meaner.

Mine had hers done leaving 2 vertabraes behind. If you dont like the job, you can take it to the vet to have it shorten.

Well since you do not know.. You really should have a vet do it. But maybe you should leave it long.. They have beautiful tails...
