First it is not legal in most states .All I hope.
Your talking a projectile from 20 to 25 grains in weight that what all my books list.
Coyotes have been considered big game for the 17 up to 100 yds.
Most likely results on a deer would be surface cratering and a wounded deer.
Plus one other item one unholy fine from the Game Ranger in this state.
The very words human and sportsmanship rule it out.

Most foxes are under half the size of a coyote and weight. The .17 HMR and .17 Rem will dispatch one without breaking a sweat, even at ranges beyond what most consider reasonable shooting distances. This caliber packs a punch even at 200 yds. I suggest some of you play with something else other than the .223 which isn't magical by any means, just cheap and since its a military rd its also popular. If the military adopted the .17 HMR as standard issue people would swear you could legally and humanely kill anything in NA and Africa with it instead of not being powerful enough to kill a fox over 100 yds. (BS). Buy one, use it and see if it doesn't kill a fox/coyote over 100yds.

As for 200 yrds, not sure about that but I wouldnt shoot one that far away anyhow. Around my part of the country theres too many deer around to try to kill one that far away. Now, you can listen to all the crappy no's on here if you wish. But, my nephew has taken down 9 deer over the last three years with a marlin 17 hmr. All were shot at distance less than 100 yrds and all but one fell on the spot they were shot or withing a 20 yard radius. I bought the same gun at Walmart on sale for $170 and my 15 yo son has recently shot his first deer, a 6 point, which also fell on the spot with a shot below the ear at approx 60 yards. We dont mounted head trophy hunt, its a meat thing for us so we dont fret over messing up a head since its not going to be mounted. We hang the antlers and scalp section on the side of the barn, thats as trophy as it gets. Get a 17 hmr and have fun with it, its a great gun with versatility.

Look ethics aside, purely speaking from a physics point. Any skull shot with 175 pounds of force will kill a whitetail. A poacher in North Carolina killed 43 whitetail deer in a two year span of time with with a 17 caliber Mach 2 before wildlife officials caught up with him. So yes it is physically possible. However extremely unethical. Any missed shot will only wound the deer. In a survival situation I would attempt to use the HMR to bring down white tail, under no other circumstances would I suggest it is a good

If you are insanely lucky. The 17 hmr is a fun plinker at the range, good for squirrels in the yard, and mediocre for varmints in the field. A good 17 hmr rifle can drive tacks at 200-250 yards, IFFFF, you have NO wind. The 17 grain bullet is simply too light to hold a trajectory at any distance with even the slightest wind. Listen to the majority here, and don't go for it. Plus, it gives you the opportunity to buy one/ or more guns here.

NO do not even try it! You need to have at least a .243 to make a clean kill on a deer. All you would do is wound it and that is NEVER a ethical thing to do. A .17 hmr rifle is a VARMIT gun meaning squirrel, mice, rats, raccoon, and small game like that. A deer is a BIG GAME animal, NEVER shoot a BIG GAME animal with a VARMIT rifle. And 200 yards, forget that it will never happen with a .17 with any animal (even with a scope) it is not that accurate of a gun.

if you look at the ballistics of the 17hmr@ 200 yds. it's between 338-407 foot pounds, i don't think it has enough energy to kill a deer. most states require at least .24 or 6mm for deer hunting and the ballistics for those are
.243@ 200yds.is from 1107-1540 ft pounds
6mm @200yds. is from 1290-1702ft pounds
and if i remember anything under 1000 ft pounds at any distance isn't enough to kill a deer. my favorite is a.270 and it'll kill with over 1000 ft pounds @400 yrds
the guy that said it can go out to 350 yds must be lying that ballistics say less than 200 ft pounds @400 yds.

Of course it will kill a deer, however, it is a VARMINT round, not a big game round. It should be illegal to use on deer EVERWHERE, in every State in the Union and everywhere else in the world.
Get a real deer gun if you plan to hunt deer. A .243 Winchester is a good starter rifle for deer.
