Depends on the person.
Hormone options are:
1) the pill and mini-pill, which are estrogen & estrogen/progesterone mixes, which the woman takes daily. they must be taken every day, at the same time to be effective. this doesn't work for me, i'd forget them.
2) the depo-provera injection which is prgesterone only. that one makes me cranky, but is good if you're breastfeeding, because estrogen reduces the milk supply while pregesterone doesn't.
3) the ortho-evera patch which is estrogen. I did the best on this because I think I have a slight estrogen shortage otherwise.
There's also IUDs which are inserted into the uterus. that's more of a long-term fix.
There's a thing they can inject into your arm too, (women), it's like a match-stick, maybe someone else knows the name of it. also more long term.
Condoms. Very effective if used correctly. I can't stand the feel of them and neither can my husband.
Diaphrams, women insert those before sex.
Female condoms.
There's lots of options, discuss this with your partner and doctor. Only condoms are effective against STDs.
I did the best with the ortho-evera patch,

As a dude, I would recommend you just always use the condom. Why? Because your woman may forget a pill, or forget to take it at the same time each day, or get sick and throw up the pill, etc. MANY women "accidentally" got pregnant on the pill. If you're in a committed relationship, and don't mind the idea of handling unplanned fatherhood, then you can leave birth control up to your woman. If you want to be sure you're not a daddy though, just wear the condom. It's alot easier to prevent a baby than raise one.

For women I would recommened the Nuva ring because It once a month you don't have to worry about taken a pill every day or the shot (depo) and for male (never can be to careful) a condom.
