Most newspapers have on-line versions. Some leave obits up for 7 days, some for a year, some for longer. The first thing to try is Google [{town} Newspaper]. Add the state/province to the search if the town is "Springfield" or "Lakeside".

Once you find the newspaper, poke around for "Obituaries" or "Archives". If you don't find what you are looking for, the link to my site that my friend Rust Skipper cited has more than you probably wanted to know about obtaining one for free.

If you know where, and the exact date the person died, it's sometimes possible to find the newspaper online, and check through their archived obituaries.

I found my cousin's obituary this way, when I didn't know that she had died, until almost a year later.

I tried geneology.com and rootsweb, but couldn't get the info without joining, or paying a fee for the info.

Hope this helps

you should be able to look in the archives in the public library. Ask them to help you find it. The only thing, it may cost you a few cents for a print out on a copier, maybe .50??

Hey marthaliou,

Go to the library where the death occured near, and look in the News archives. You can call a librarian if you are not close to it, and they will help you too. Look up the library in the Yellow Pages.

Have you contacted the newspaper from the area of the death?

Have you posted your request on ROOTSWEB.COM?
