The holiday is because Martin Luther King Jr. was a pioneering civil rights leader. He just happened to be a preacher, too. It is, and always has been,a secular holiday..

It's a pretty secular holiday... Just like what Christmas has become. The meaning behind holidays in America has been disregarded. Easter is now about bunnies and eggs... Halloween is about candy and costumes... It's everywhere.

Why do Athiests accuse Christians of attempting to 'Christianize' America through not supporting gay marraige?..

good question-here's another-will atheists take the government to court for naming a federal holiday for a minister, as a violation of the separation of church and state? will he be accused by atheists of having spent his life forcing his nonviolent Christian views of equality and brotherhood 'down our throats?'

It is only politics. It's known that the man ran around on his wife.
I think the name should be changed. Blacks (& other minorities) have a lot more noble people to choose from than an adulterer to honor a move for more civilized regard in society.

Dr. King was an excellent man. I am not the least bit upset with him having his own personal holiday.
