Vice President (who is also the Speaker of the Senate)
Speaker of the House
President Pro Tem of the House
President Pro Tem of the Senate
Secretary of State
From there, it goes through the remainder of the cabinet, in I believe the order in which the various departments were established.
During Watergate, when Sec of State General AL Haig said "I'm in charge here", he was wrong.
Years and years ago, I read a book titled "The Man, by Irving Wallace. It starts with the President and the Speaker of the House returning from the VP's funeral. A day or two later, they left for a conference in Germany, a conference being held in a building that had survived the bombings of WWII. But the building could only survive for so long, and it gave way while the conference was in session. The Speaker was killed instantly, and the President died in surgery. When the group of high officials looked around the room in Washington, the turned to the President Pro Tem of the House, only to realize that that man was black. An interesting book, and set in 1964.
