It really varies from person to person. You may be reacting to the mild sweetish aroma which is brought out by roasting or baking. While "mild," it can become an almost sickly sweet smell which could bring on your need to throw up. You will probably find this most common with poppy seed dressings and breads.

It doesn't make me gag, but I happen to know that eating a bunch of poppyseeds can make you test positive on a drug test for up to 72 hours.
Think it has anything to do with that?

Do they have an odor at all? There are so many stronger smells that it's only odd that this mild aroma affects you so strongly.

Most people have odors they can't stand. That much is normal.
