there are much more humane options than vocal chord removal. i am sure that the dog has a reason, whether you know what it is or not. my best advise is to keep his mouth occupied. buy a kong (or similar toy) and put peanut butter or cream cheese in it mixed with treats or food. then freeze it. your dog will go nuts, and frozen it should take him 2-4 hours to get through. also try taking him for longer walks or playing with him more often. try frisbee or flyball. vocal chord removal is very painful and is illegal in many places. talk to a trainer or behaviorist about other options.

you can also get a citronella collar. is mists the dog with a citrus spray when he barks. (automatically, you do not have to be present during the bark. the collar admisters the mist based on the vibrations in the dog's throat) it corrects him on three levels. 1 the sound of the mist 2 the feel of the mist and 3 the smell of the mist. i work at a shelter and we will use these on hounds because they tend to bark so much that all of the other dogs join and and you can't hear anything except barking. they work great and are completely humane. reccommended by the aspca.

I have a degree in Animal Health Technology, and I can assure you that there IS such an operation, called "debarking". However, it's not always successful, you may end up with a dog who sounds like a seal or sea lion.................and it's expensive.
Plus, there are always the dangers of anesthesia and surgery.
Dogs barking usually mean they are bored, are you spending enough time with them? If you are working 8-10 hours a day and they are alone in the backyard, of course they are going to bark. I don't know if you are ABLE to go home for lunch and let them out. In any case, the larger the dog, the longer the walk..........but TRY to take them out on a walk when you get home from work, even if you can only take 15 minutes. The more interaction they get from you, the less likely they will to become bored and to bark for "no reason".

I think investing in a remote collar and training would be much better idea. A remote collar is different than a bark collar. The bark collar zaps for every bark and can be set off by a dog barking close to the dog wearing it. A remote collar is controlled by you. This way, you can allow your dog to bark a couple of times, but administer the "zap" when it becomes excessive. Again, this takes training time on your part, but is much easier on your dog, than putting them thru surgery.

I fostered a dog that someone did that to. How horribly cruel! There are collars you can get or you could train the dog. What if someone tried to break into your home and the dog couldn't bark? If you can afford the surgery, then you can afford training or the collar. How many dogs do you have? Try letting them go out, one at a time, and see if that helps. But do NOT have any surgery done on them.

The short answer is yes. There is a surgical debarking procedure. The catch is that no, and I repeat NO self-respecting, law-abiding, ethical veterinarian would do this procedure. It is classified as "cosmetic surgery" and therefore deemed unecessary by the Veterinary Associations of North America (both Canada and the US, and I suspect most of Europe, since their animal welfare laws are light-years ahead of ours!)
Try training, a citronella bark collar (NOT a shock collar- also cruel and abusive) or keep your dogs indoors. Also, explain to your neighbours that you are trying to remedy the situation and hope that they can be patient while you come to a solution.
Good luck to you. You're in a tight spot.

there is "Debarking" which the vet does something to alter/remove voicebox, not entirely clear how it works as I dont' agree with the whole procedure but you have the option. Otherwise, there are always dog trainers that you can pay to come out to the property which are usually quite effective and generally, if it doesn't work, you get your money back. NOt sure where you are at but here in Australia there is a company called Bark Busters, been on tv before and my grandparents swear by them

There is a debarking procedure that can be done. It is extremely cruel though and you are basically taking away a major form of communication for them. A better solution would be to teach the "quiet" command. When they start barking, give them a treat (they have to stop barking to eat it) then tell them quiet. Repeat this consistently and you should see an improvement. They will still bark, but at least this way you have taught them to stop on command.

Yes, the vet will cut your dogs' vocal cords making them mute. Your decision. In my opinion I like my dog way more than my neighbors so I would probably buy them some sleeping pills, vodka and ear plugs (the neighbors, not the dogs). You might want to try those 'training collars', they give your pup a zap every time they bark. Just try it on first to see how it really feels before you put one on the pups.

I don't like persistent dog-barking, but surgery? I know they do it in the US but it just sounds really cruel.
There are loads of ideas on the net for reducing dog noise, but I think that the main thing to bear in mind is that dogs bark for a reason. Sometimes to alert the family that someone is coming, sometimes to tell you that they want to come in and sometimes because they are having fun. You can change their behavior by changing your behavior.
Having been the victim of really bad dog owners you can really grow to hate some of them, though most seem to be considerate enough.

Don't make it have surgery. That's just cruel. It's need to bark lol!
If your neighbours are complaiing but a muzzle on the dog when it really needs it. But don;t keep it on all day or it won't be able to eat or anything.
