White rice products have nearly indefinite shelf lives. If stored properly and protected from infestation and extreme temperature fluctuations, white rice products may be maintained for long periods of time. For best results, place the product in a sealed container and store in a cool, dry place. Uncooked white rice may also be stored in a pantry, refrigerator, or freezer.

Since brown rice has a higher oil content than white rice, its shelf life is not as long. Please refer to the BEST BY date on the package; which for most brown rice products is 18 months from the date of manufacture. Refrigerated storage is recommended for brown rice.

For taste and quality, most rice mixes have a limited shelf life. Spices do not maintain their freshness for long periods of time, therefore it is recommended to use the rice mixes shortly after purchasing, but within 18 months from the production code date. Please refer to the BEST BY date on the package.

I'm sure there is a "suggested" sell by date, but long grain white rice will last for years and years. At cool temperatures the starches are completely crystallized and it has no fat to go rancid. Like anything it loses a little of its flavor and texture over time, but as long as it's dry, bug free, and has not discolored, it should be good to go. I found some old rice at the back of a shelf that must be 3 or 4 years old, and while it seemed to be a little more prone to under and over cooking it is exactly as I expect it to be.

Remember that the usual food sickness culprit bacteria needs moisture to thrive and die at high temperature. You typically boil rice for at least 15 minutes.

I have had less luck with short grain rices ... I don't know if it was the different starch composition, whether the rice was not so fresh when I bought it, or the if the producer was less hygienic in the first place, because I've had boxes of short grain rice that get infested with little bugs over time.

Brown rice still has some fat so it will store for only about a year.

The most common answer is up to one year which basically takes in all kitchens foods, spices, etc: if properly capped and stored correctly. Rice will last a long time provided it is in a sealed container (no moisture at all getting in) away from any heat sauces, including light and in a dry cool room (70-80- degrees.) This is also assuming there are no other ingredients mixed in with it.
