The Avenger got robbed! I love the body style, wish they made it a rear wheel drive car so I could drop a V-8 in there!
"I shoulda had a V-8!"
If you buy one, get the 4 cyl. The 6 cyl are usually automatics and finding parts for them (mods, improvements, etc) is a real pain. Not too fun to work on either.
The other, 4 cyl engine is a lot simpler to work on and easier to find parts (stock, mods, turbo, pistons, etc). They also used that engine in several other cars, Eclipse, Neons (up to 98) and Breezes.
The power difference between the two engine is very small believe it or not.
I know you asked about reliability, I would avoid the 6cyl. All cars need repairs at some point in time. It is the maintenance and the treatment the car has endured in between, that determines the severity of the repairs and the cost.
Ohh, and yes, I do own an Avenger (4 cyl, 5 sp) with 213,000 miles on it. Has been through 3 clutches and a couple of valve cover gaskets, a water pump and a timing belt.
Is it a good car? I would say so.
It is not the fastest thing in the world but it serves it's purpose.
P.S. People like Alex are the ones that sell you a ragged out car telling you how good it is, when they cannot afford to fix them after abusing them.

I owned the counter part Chrysler Sebring v6 got great gas mileage, as long as you keep them tuned up and the oil changed they are good cars. I just hated mine because it was too slow to react when I pushed the pedal. I would only pay $5500 if it was in excellent condition.
The good thing about them is they handle well and can stop fast. But the turning radius is about as good as a four door long bed Ford
Mine was at 140k miles when I sold it and it had no problems
I'm just a guy who can't stand anything less than a rumbling V8 under my hood.

It is American made so you can bet that it will need work every 500 miles. You can't floor it, and it's supposed to be a sporty car, coming from America in 1999, you can be sure it's a POS. (I can still floor my 1993 Camry V6 and redline it, race it.) You are much better off with a Japanese car for $5500. Try a Toyota MR2, Corolla S, Camry Solara V6, Honda Accord Coupe V6. All good cars for near that $$. All will last for 10x longer than a Dodge Avenger, and be better overall. Especially the MR2, Accord and Camry.
I know people who had Dodge Avengers and they in fact, did need a bunch of work.

My buddy owned a Avenger, and the damn thing blew a heater core and threw radiator fluid all over the inside of the car.. This thing was needing fixed about every 1500 miles or so.. It it was not one thing it was another.. Watch out for recalls, the balljoints and controll arms can snap if you hit a hole hard. This happed to me and him wile driving down a open road... and the parts for this Car WILL COST YOU $$$$$$$ BLING BLING. You don't want a Avenger... Get something else like a 300c or 300m..

I didn't own one but I sold a lot of them, it was Chrysler/Mitsubishi's first joint project car along with the Sebring a little later. the V6 is rock solid and if you have the papers on the maintenance and the car is clean, $5500 is not too far out of round, it's more than wholesale but you are buying a car you know.

i could propose that until you have had them regarded at totally and risk-free practices checked, plus understand that all the essential faults or issues have been already been repaired on them stay removed from those automobiles.
