A hybrid bike is intended primarily for on road use. They usually feature narrow tires and tend to be lighter. Consider this a "sport" bike that leans towards a road bike.

A comfort bike is usually used for on road and off road on groomed trails. It usually has heavily padded saddles and things to respond to creature comforts. It should be used for trips of 10 miles or less. Comfort bikes tend to be heavier and not equipped as well mechanically as a hybrid.

A hybrid is usually a cross between a road bike and a mountain bike. It will have the 700c (larger) wheels like on a road bike but with a wider tire. This type of bike is better if you want to leave your neighborhood and ride for miles (10 to 40miles)

A comfort bike is just that... a bike that is comfortable. It is more of a cross between a mountain bike and a cruiser. Everything is adjustable on a comfort bike. The stem angle adjusts so you can position the hanblebars higher which will put you in a more upright sitting position with your weight off of your hands and puts it on the saddle. This takes the pressure, most of it, off of your hands, wrists, shoulders and neck. This bike is designed for the neighborhood and is great for rides usually under 15 miles.

Either on that you go with I would suggest that you visit your local bike shop and find out the correct size that you need (the frames come in different sizes, its not just the wheel size like at a department store). You may spend a little more at your local bike shop but they can help set up the bike, possible swap out parts if needed (don't forget about the saddle, very important for you and it to "get along"...this goes a long way to the comfort of your ride)

The main thing is to be comfortable and have fun, if your not you won't ride the bike and that would defeat the whole reason why you bought the bike.(along with cluddering up your garage)

Everyone else has done a pretty good job about explaining the differences. Some bike shops you go to won't differentiate between the two. Ones that do are usually larger shops and will have more inventory.

I would go for a comfort bicycle for you. Comforts bikes are usually cheaper than hybrids. They are less durable of course, but it sounds more fitting for what you want to use it for.

I would expect $200 to $300 for a good model.

Hybrid will be the best for your multi-purpose ride around the neighborhood. If you want to ride quick on the road for 30 to 100 miles, get a road bike.
