No not great swimmers but you do have to be able to pass a water qualification. Its not hard but if you are scared of water you may have problems.

You dont neccessarily have to be a great swimmer. I have a neighbor who was in the marines for about i think 6 years and told me they do more land work than sea and air work. Leave that part to the navy and navy SEALs!

Great? No but they do have to be able to swim well enough to stay afloat with their equipment.
Please remember marines have to be on ships and ships are at sea for a lot of time.
So won't if be a good idea to know how to swim?

Marines need to know HOW TO SWIM, but not to be GREAT swimmers.
In bootcamp you gonna have to take a swimming test, it is not difficult at all but it can be really scary of you cannot swim.

All Marines are "drown proofed" Meaning they must stay afloat ( tread water) with gear (75-100# ) for a given period. Sorry, I dont remember how long.

Swim yes, great no. Being more physically fit (running, push ups, sit ups), orderly and team minded are Marine requirements...

If I remember my boot camp days correctly, all you have to do to pass is be able to tread water for about five minutes and swim about 50 yards. That's it, pretty much, for the lowest swim qualification.

If you are stationed on a ship and it gets blown up from under you, knowing how to swim would be a good skill to have don't you think?

No, they just have to be able to swim. It's part of their basic training. You don't want to go overboard and not be able to swim at all.

No...I'm was only S3 qualified in boot camp (I can float long enough to be rescued)...other than that, I can't swim a stroke.
